Just installed my new E6600...

difference between dual core and single core is that.. theres 2 processors in a duo.. meaning you can do more stuff without that lagginess the computer has when using alot of programs at once, like editing video, photoshop, listening to music and playing a game.
and to the other dude, you might need to install new stuff because of the motherboard might not be compatible with what you have now.. so you'd need new ram and videocard if you dont have one or if the one you have isnt good enough.

Core 2 Duo is not actually 2 physical cores but they are amazing chips. There is basically 2 chips inside the 1. The clock speed (2.4ghz) has dropped but it's not about clock speed anymore, it's about how much gets done in cycle. I went from a newer Pentium4 4ghz (overclocked) to this 2.4ghz and its shitting on it.
As for price you can see on the links to get an idea but here's what I paid:
E6600 - 309.99
Asus P5W motherboard - 166.99 (open box but everything was sealed so it may have been new)
XFX 7600 GS - 96.37 ( - $40 mail in rebate = $56.37)
2GB ram (bought in Feb) - $255.95
had the lian-li case, 74gb Raptor, lightscribe burner, antec power supply and Scythe heatsink already. I spent $616 on the new stuff (including other case & ram) so I could sell it to my friend for $500. So thats $116 to upgrade then there's $80 in rebates so I end up spending ~$36 to upgrade

if you overclock, youll void the warranty on your video card.. just a heads up.
mrraskal666 all you really need to watch out for if youre gonna upgrade is the ram.. im sure the videocard will work still unless you get a new one that should still work.. get pci-e though, with a pci-e enabled motherboard.. usually the ram will be something like pc3200 or higher.. it should say on the stick(s) of ram when you buy the motherboard it will tell you what kind of ram is compatible with it.

The best bang for your buck CPU out there is the Pentium D Dual Core 805(2.66 GHz). With the right board, it can be overclocked past 4.0 GHz. It can still boot a system at 4.2 GHz, but cant at 4.3 GHz. Ive also heard stories of people gettin these CPU's up and OVER 5 GHz.
Here is the article on Tomshardware.com. It was done about 8 months ago, and the CPU only costs $87 right now. Also, the price of the boards used in these experiments have dropped.
