To be so advanced (independent game, slang, computers, do for self promotions, sales and marketing) why do so many of us in and from the Bay refuse to grow musically. I love Mob music as much as the next nigga and thats why I listen to old Totally Insane, 11/5, Click, Spice, Short etc etc.

But why do fans keep wanting artist to make the same songs with the same beats, cadence, hooks and topics? And worst yet, why do the artists keep makin the shit. Music is about progression. The same niggas that was makin music in the early to mid-nineties in the Bay are still at it with varying degrees of success but most of them are not selling shit (both because of sagging music sales and because they are making the same songs with different titles.).

I'm not one to knock nobody's dream but damn, if you dropped in the 90's and had some success (50k-200k+ sold) and you still droppin and aint scanning 5 digits in sales (and I say scan because the days of claiming you sold hella records in mom and pops is over cuz we dont have many mom and pop stores left) then give it up and pass that knowledge along to a hungry youngsta who has the talent but lacks the vision.

In the south and on the east coast they not trying to make the same shit they made in the 90's and compared to us they are winning. Why are we so stuck in the past that we cant create a solid future? it aint about whether you like Hyphy or Mob shit, its about making new shit and being open to new sounds, thats the only way we are gonna get anywhere. Just my thoughts, think forward not backwards.

a lot of artists are one dimensional. and a some of the og bay rappers have drug problems so growing musically is probably one of the last things on their minds.

that's true i feel you. i think it also depends on what type of drugs the person is using and drugs effect everyone differently. So one person could do a whole bunch of dope and get all creative and introspective and another person could do the same drugs and get writer's block.

The forward/backwards musical progression arguement is played out in 2008. Who is selling records and who is popular is almost entirely dictated by the major labels and the media.

It wouldn't matter if Soulja Boy put out a CD that sounded identical to Amerikkka's Nightmare right now, he would be selling records because consumers are highly suggestable; the majority of them don't decide what they like, they let MTV decide for them.

Until people start embracing the idea that this business is much more about the image/promotion/markerting than it is about the actual music, they will have trouble pushing units.

I feel you but i really think thats a defeatist attitude and that most artist that have that attitude have let the game beat them. Soulja boy won before he even signed to a major bruh. The numbers do not lie, that lil dude literally had the internet goin nuts. I travel a lot and niggas down south were on that shit hard before he even got on the radio.

One thing i will agree with you on is the business portion is about your team, your marketing and image but the business cannot exist without the music.

I chop it up with producers and artist from the bay often and its amazing how many dont know the business side of things so that is important. but on this thread we talkin about the music.
