Left tackle Jonas Jennings was placed on injured reserve today, thus ending his season, 49ers coach Mike Nolan announced at his weekly press conference.

Jennings sustained a high ankle sprain in the second quarter of the 49ers' loss to the Giants on Oct. 21. He missed the next two games with the injury. He will require surgery to remove loose bodies, Nolan said.

It's been a tumultuous season for Jennings, who is in the third year of a seven-year, $36 million contract. He missed a game earlier this season due a personal reasons. Last week, Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott had harsh words about Jennings, implying that he had heard that Jennings had said his teammates don't trust him.

Rookie Joe Staley, who is capable of playing left tackle, will remain as the starter on the right side, Nolan said. Adam Snyder, who struggled against the Falcons, will continue to start at left tackle. The 49ers will likely fill the roster spot on Tuesday.

Guard Justin Smiley might opt for season-ending shoulder surgery later this week after an MRI revealed a torn labrum in his right shoulder.

Smiley said he planned to fly Tuesday to Birmingham, Ala., to get a second opinion from noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews.

"I'll know on Wednesday if I'm going to have surgery or wait a couple weeks," Smiley said. "I won't be playing this week. If Andrews thinks it needs to be done sooner than later, I'll opt to do it on Thursday."

Smiley sustained a right shoulder dislocation when he recovered a first-quarter fumble. Falcons rookie defensive tackle Trey Lewis dove on Smiley's shoulder. It took 20 minutes, a muscle relaxant and four trainers to get Smiley's shoulder back in the socket, he said.

Last season, Smiley played 14 games and missed no playing time with a torn labrum in his left shoulder. This injury was much more significant because of the difficult of getting it back into place.

If Smiley undergoes surgery, he would be expected to rehab for about four months. Smiley is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in March, and could command a nice contract.

"I'm still excited," Smiley said. "I have some great game film out there. I need to get ready and hopefully I can be back with the 49ers next year."

Smiley lauded the performance of David Baas, who entered the game and played the rest of the way at right guard against the Falcons.

"There will be no drop-off," Smiley said. "David Baas played a great game."

Earlier Monday, 49ers coach Mike Nolan said left tackle Jonas Jennings would be placed on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain that will require surgery.

Man, I hate to say it but after losing to the Falcons, the 9ers just might be one of the worst teams in the league....

They're probably around the ranks of the Rams and Dolphins....

It's been horrible watching them lately. :ermm:

I wouldn't know about their Madden ratings.. My 360 overheated and got the "3 rings of death." I've been too lazy to fix it. I only got to play Madden 08 for a short period of time..

But I do know that David Baas and Adam Snyder have been performing better than Jonas Jennings and Justin Smiley when they've filled in for them.
