Stackhouse allegedly grabbed woman during dispute

ESPN.com news services

Washington Wizards guard Jerry Stackhouse was charged with assault on a female Sunday, ESPN has learned.

Stackhouse was arrested Sunday on a charge brought by a woman.

The incident allegedly occurred in a dispute over a beach house, according to Sgt. Chris Fuller of the Atlantic Beach Police Department.

Stackhouse, 28, apparently had rented a house in this coastal vacation community and believed he had the property until Monday. The real estate agent, an older woman, said he had to vacate the premises Sunday, Fuller said.

The 6-foot-5 Stackhouse allegedly tried to grab the lease from the woman's hand and instead grabbed her. The woman felt threatened and went to the Magistrate's Office to obtain a warrant for Stackhouse's arrest on the misdemeanor assault charge, police said.

After being contacted by police, Stackhouse turned himself in, accompanied by his attorney, Fuller said. He was taken to a jail in nearby Beaufort but no longer was being held when the shift changed at 7 p.m. ET, according to someone who answered the telephone at the jail.

It is yet another case of an NBA player running afoul of the law in the offseason. In the last two weeks, superstar Kobe Bryant, Damon Stoudamire and Darrell Armstrong have been arrested for sexual assault, marijuana possession and assaulting a female police officer, respectively.

A two-time NBA All-Star, Stackhouse is a native of the Tar Heel State who played collegiately at North Carolina. He has played for Philadelphia, Detroit and Washington in an eight-year career, averaging 21.3 points and 3.7 rebounds in 582 games.

Stackhouse was born about 70 miles from Atlantic Beach, in Kinston, N.C., and attended the University of North Carolina for two years before heading to the NBA.

Stackhouse has averaged 21.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game in 582 career games.
