Police charged Russell with a drug violation during the July 5 incident.
The case raised awareness of the product known as "purple drank," which can include codeine, alcohol, soft drinks and Jolly Ranchers candy.
Former NFL player Shannon Sharpe told USA TODAY in July that the use of purple drank among NFL players is "something that needs to be addressed."
In court on Wednesday, sheriff's deputy Johnny Thornton said there was "freshly poured" cup in Russell's home when the executed a search warrant.
"There was a Styrofoam cup sitting on the nightstand and it had an orange-colored liquid in it," which later tested positive for codeine," Thornton said, via the Press-Register.
Thornton also said police found a bottle of codeine in a cabinet for which there was no prescription.
Stevenson told the court he mixed the codeine beverage alone. Even after his testimony, judge Charles McKnight sent Russell's case to a grand jury.
