GOOD MUSIC SELLS....WEAK MUSIC DOESN'T....AT ALL LEVELS OF THE GAME...I JUST FOCUS ON KEEPING MY MUSIC GOOD & NOT BEING STAGNANT...I SWITCH UP ON MUSIC STYLES 2 GAIN DIFFERENT FANS...LIKING THE LYRICS & LIKING THE MUSIC IS 2 DIFFERENT THINGS..EVERYBODY IS NOT PROFFESSIONAL & SALES USUALLY TELL THE DIFFERENCE

i said wayne album sold more than some of pac's,

just showing the there is still money to be made from the rap shit
yeah but when the wayne went crazy with sales, nothing else was coming close

when pac was making good/great sales, there were other artists doing similar numbers at the same time. basically there were more sales overall, not just one artist.

I'm sitting back watching how this new game is played before I gamble on it. Know that it takes a lot more than a nice record to move product. You may have the right record, business plan team on point and still fail to make your investment profitable. Don't forget your in the business of selling records and what once was is not like the D game no more. Rap fiends are sampling dope global through the internet. Remember if your making music for the streets your pushing to the hustlers. Name one hustler who ain't trying to get over. My advice to you don't focus on your fans, Find your believers. Until we figure out how to sell bottled water to a whale. It's a wrap.

This was a good read. Billy Jam has always been the man. Great journalist. I was one to always say that you can still make a living from selling physical cds. I believed that if you went out there and stayed in the streets 8-10 hours a day, just like you would at a full time job then you could make more then a decent living.

With me taking over Ownership of Street Masters Magazine WESTCOAST I was NOT able to focus on being in the Streets everyday and staying in peoples faces and I saw my worst year ever in music sales. I still believe that if I was out there working hard I would of brought in at least $35,000-$50,000 off of Cd sales and Merchandise sales this year but I see clearly that you can not and will not survive anymore doing it part time, or half way.

If artists get their digital downloads set up correctly (people get your music to Verizon Wireless, TRUST ME!), promote their digitals online, in Magazines, on their flyers, shout it out at their performances plus stay in the streets as much as you can. I am not talking about an hour a day and then giving up, I am talking about a Minimum of 4-5 solid hours a day, even if you have to do it after your real job shift, you will make it. You will move your music.

I will never step away from the Street part of Selling my music ever again, no matter what my schedule is like. And my Merchandising designs on my T-shirts, Sweat shirts, Coffee mugs, iPod Covers, Joggin Suits will all be stepped up. Merchandising is a big part of music money.

If a artist was really to hit the street with cd's and with some merchandise at minimum of 20 hours a week - actually out there along people at the mall, downtown areas, bars, any professional games, concerts ect. they would be able to get some money... but in reality most is way to lazy to grind that hard - probably the major difference of who makes it and who doesn't.

Realest Shit I Done Heard This Year

Tay put it as simple as possible, if you love what you doin, then you stick to the script til the wheels begin to turn for you. The mirage of the Get Quick scheme has been exposed for the fraud it was, and now only the strong survive in these hard times, but honestly that's a good thing. This is when you find out if you built for this game. Alot of cats get on here and talk bad about the rap game soon as they find out they have no place in this game in the first place. They get to talkin about how all their other life's ventures pay em more than the rap game any way. Well good for you. Any real muthafucka should have other business interest outside of music anyway, but that don't mean you shit on the game other people's dream, cause this shit is real to some of us. Too many people followin what the news feed you. The majors want the independents to give up so they can monopolize on the available money and resources out there. If anything is time for the OG's to take the available talent under their wing and start giving them game on what it takes to be more than just a artist. All these fly by nights either dig in deep and go for the ride or get the fuck out the way. In the end, the real gonna shine so if you ready to grind and smarten up your moves, by all means keep playin the game. Would you stop playin basket ball just becasue you couldn't make it to the league? Would you stop playing a musical instrument just because you were not a member of a successful traveling band. Then why would you quit rappin because you may not be the top bread winner in the game. If you love what you do, then that is the bottom line to it all. Me personally, I'm 20 years in and if money was the deciding factor, then I know I wasn't keepin it real to me and mine, and should be ashamed. It's alot of fakes and frauds in life, so the real keep sucka duckin and side steppin anyway. Hard times is when cats are at their most innovative.

I agree 100%. If you in this shit only for the money then you in the wrong business. If money is your only mitigating factor for being in this game then your art will always suffer. You have to just make the best music you possibly can, promote it, get off yo ass and sell it and let the chips fall where they may. Right now is honestly the best time to be an independent if you think about it. We can reach a worldwide market without touring the world. I know it's hard times right now but somebody somewhere is gettin money. The South gettin it, you dont see them complainin. Niggas just gotta grind harder. I was in Atlanta this summer and I had niggas comin at me with CD's left and right. EVERYWHERE. I run around all over California and I have to say I dont think not ONE nigga asked me to buy they CD. You dont HUSTLE, you dont EAT. PERIOD.
