Peace.
Its gangsters out there rappin, man. Its pimps, hustlers, and monsters out there. Trust me. The hardest part of workin with them is the life factor.... its the life factor that can wear you down, and take artists away from reaching their potential. 3 jailed artists, one murdered artist, the daily grind, and a summer of funk (thats just what I can mention)... all I can say is that these artists are trying to do something to better their lives. THAT is the main reason I fuck with PaperTrail. I got family in there who are trying to fly right and stay away from that lifestyle... so I'mma supprt, lend my business saavy & expertise, skrilla, etc to make it happen and at least give these cats a shot.

The thing about it is that you can feel their realness. Its their main asset. There is a song by one of the artists (Detrimental) where he says:

"I aint blamin yall for my ways of life, I chose to do this.
It took a whole lot of @@@ for me to give up the game and
do this. "

That says it all right there. These artists, every one of them, is actively turning their lives around. I'm not gonna lie and say they're angels, but I will say that they are real niggas who are tryin to make this rap shit work. All the while, I'm in their ear about other ways to come up (investing money, real estate, etc). But they got their hearts pinned on this rap shit. I will give them credit because the music on knock. But that doesn't guarantee success.

A couple of em, no matter how fly the beat is, no matter, how "flossy" the sound, they are always gonna come with some gangsta lyrics. That's all they know. Its a lot of fakes out there, and people just talkin to entertain.... but there are rappers who rap about/from their real experiences and lifestyle.

Bottom line: gangsta's are out there. Some of em do rap, but they don't last very long unless they can get their lives together.

Anything that will keep these niggas off them mufuckin Richmond and Oakland streets we will do. Even if it means hooking them up with another label that can make their shit crack. This PaperTrail shit will work - it HAS to work... its too much ridin on it to fail.

I went in my computer and dug up some shit that I think shows what I'm talkin about. I just put up this song called "Miss You" by Detrimental. It was thrown out, and its not even finished. You hear on the third verse talkin to the producer (Sham) instead of rappin..this is not on the album just shit that was thrown away. BUT, listen to what he's sayin.

I already know he's unrefined. Sometimes he just loses it and talks hella fast, lol...But we fuck with artists like that because you can groom and refine a artist. You can teach em to slow the fuck down. But you can't teach what's in they chest.

damn... i heard the song. your throw aways is better than most of the stuff out there. you can feel it. Why didnt yall finish the song.

See that's the thing, niggas like this aint fancy. Dude doesn't use big words or whatever but you just feel what he's sayin.
lol @ "So fuck you in sign language if yo bitch ass can't hear"
Warden, can you put that on my Cd you suppose to send. The part about his mom and girl tryin to get him to fill out applications... niggas can relate to that shit.

Thats probably the best line I've head in a good minute:
"Fuckk that, imma grab my shit and put my life - on the line.
Studio time aint free, so I'm back on the fuckin grind."

I can tell you in the O its some cool rappers thats thugs inreal life, but they never really do shit with it. I hope these cats on your label can actually make it crack. You can feal the realness intheir voices. You shouldn't throw that song away. Make it two verses and slap it on a album.

I really don't know. Sham probably didnt like the beat, detrimental might not have liked somethin. I don't know. But they are very picky.

No... that's what we AINT gon do. You dont compromise. If we know we can do better, then you dont push it on the customers/fans. Give your best. Its in the trash, it stays in the trash. The only song that ever made it "out" of the PaperTrail trash bin is "Leave Him Alone". It actually made it onto the album, but it had been tossed. I had to take a stand on that one, them niggas was tossin away good/quality mobb shit. But naw, man we not finna "slap it on" a album.

As far as your cd-r, its too late. We already got em made and almost finished packaging. Just waitin on the rest of the mailers to come... then you'll get it. Just trust me on the song selection. You said you already have the album so we gave you the CD with 6 or 7 new songs on there.

being in the pen means you got caught.. and jail doesn't automatically make you a gangsta.. prisons got bitches, snitches, & homosexuals running around..

Game Warden, i respect what you wrote..

^Game Warden - Read what Jimmy just said brotha....I think you got me twisted. I have worked with the REAL gangsta's in this business as well believe me I know how it goes down. My point was based on LYRIC'S and how the Industry "WILL" pick you apart if you a gangsta rapper and your credability...it's just a KNOWN fact...they've done it to EVERY gangsta rapper...

Respect,

Playa Rae.

BTW - Here is my full quote:

"I like both alot...it's what makes the HIP HOP CULTURE what it is....DIVERSE. On the gangsta tip...I just think there will ALWAYS be loop holes in their credability no matter who you are because if you really so Gangsta you'd in the pen DONE DEAL PERIOD. As for the hip hoppers...I hate the fact that some of them look at it like there is no real skill or no home for it in the business. My stand point is this...we don't all wanna have to go to a dictionary to break down what your saying to understand it. I love it all tho even the Playa shit...I'm somewhere in between.

Probably the biggest thing that bugs me these days bout Rap, Hip Hop whatever, is that folks seem to think you BITCHMADE if you don't do Gangsta Rap...like you soft or something. Rap don't make you hard.

Peace."

Its all conversation. I understood your point. I just wanted to focus on two parts for discussion. One, there are actually rappers have lived their shit. But the main thing I wanted communicate is that there is good and bad parts of havin "real" gangsta type cats rappin.

Its good because the music is raw. You can feel it.
Its bad because these cats can't seem to stay above water for very long and end up in wasting their potential. Its always some shit that pops up. I know some producers that wont even fuck with these kinds of artists becuse its more hassle than its worth. You be in the middle of a project and a nigga is callin you from jail - collect. Or you get a guy who hasn't come around in a while and come to find out this nigga is out there puttin in work. Or my favorite, "Don't put that song out yet, I don't want my PO to hear what's goin down." Just nonstop bullshit. Artists gotta make a commitment to change their lifestyle... otherwise, any good things they accomplish will just get swallowed up by that streetlife.

We got a interview on KPOO next Sunday (Detrimental and Big Mel). It will be interesting if they touch on this topic.

Ay, though, listen to this quick lil track from Detrimental. Its funny becuase he is so fuckin unrefined... sometimes he raps too fast, you can tell he is not a technically perfect rapper. he wont win any lyric contests, but you can always feel him....(even if they end up in the trash). Its called "Miss You".

Here it go:
