Mia Rose has just signed with Ryan Leslie of Next Selection Records (Cassie's label). For those of you that don't frequent Youtube, she's a pretty white girl with a good voice and posts videos of herself singing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNIX7-bnPZQ
Now there is a lot of controversy about this girl because she joined Youtube on December 29, 2006 and became the most viewed and subscribed to user in January. She is now the #3 all time most viewed person and the #1 all time most subscribed muscian on Youtube. I saw this myself in January and thought it was crazy how she got millions of views in a couple of weeks.
Well susupicious users on Youtube did some investigating on her account and found that hundreds if not thousands of her subscribers are fake accounts with no videos watched. Another person showed that Youtube featured her in January as the only popular channel for brand new users to subscribe to. In other words first time users who don't know how to use Youtube were asked if they wanted to subscribe to popular channels and her channel was the only one showing up during the sign up process making it bias. They usually show a number of channels to subcribe to. She claims she has no PR team behind her but I believe she couldn't have gotten so many views and subscribers in such a short period of time without inflating statistics and dishonest promotion from Youtube/her team. She's cute but not extremely talented enough to get so much attention in a short period of time.
Esmee Denters is a way more talented singer but she got her fame off of talent without fake statistics boosting her ratings. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXVrnv7gnVQ She's currently in negotiations for a major deal too. It took her 6 months to get discovered. It took Mia 3 months to get a deal but she had the "powers that be" behind her.
I didn't want to give this mediocre singer any more attention but it just pisses me off that Youtube is doing this type of shit. There are other people that became overnight Youtube celebrities that are also in question. I'm just pissed that they compromised the integrity of free broadcasting. Payola and corporate muscle is going to influence their decision on who to promote and push just like Clearchannel with radio.
I should've known. If money talks, justice walks.
