wasn't it also about the North states modernizing the Southern states because the northern states were industrialized and the Southern states were still rellying
on cotton, tobacco, and sugar they were fighting because they had a different views on how to run the country

Considering the fact that he makes over 30 posts a day trying to get into the eye candy forum I would say not many. This guy has been banned over 3 times now for spamming the board and trying to reach 300 so he can hit eye candy.

History is always biast because it is written by the victors - if the South won then I'm sure they'd put their own spin on it and suggest alternative reasons as to why the war started.

So what exactly was the civil war fought for? I'm Australian and thus don't know a great deal about American history, but I've always been told that it was fought over slavery - sophisticated northerners wanting to stop trailor-trash southerners from exploiting slaves. What was the real reason? Preservation of the Union etc.? - short and sweet explanation please...

as said by White Devil, mainly states rights...that each state had the right to do what they wanted, pretty much...and what i said before

and the releasing of the slaves doesnt necessarily indicate Lincoln was against slavery...he was more for bringing the south back to the union, which he thought would be obtained by turning the slaves against their masters...that didnt really work though. what really was the key to turning the tide in the war over to the North was the Union blockade of british supplies going to the South. (Britain wanted the South, as payback for the Revolutionary War) it established the might of the US navy.

Like I've said before, it was to preserve the union. The Confederacy wanted to secede. They had every legal right to secede and yet the Union declared the war that had the most American casualties of all time. But only a few years later they changed their tune and thought it was ok for Texas secede and that Mexico was in the wrong for using force.

EDIT: Why does every one keep thinking the South even had a chance? Lee was a million times a greater General than Grant, but there was no way they could have won the war. They lacked resources such as man power and money.

kingsville, you have the nerve to make a mothafuckin "jungle monkeys" joke, when it is plain by your posts you have a third-grade reading level and would probably place Australia and Africa next to each other on a map of the United States?

No.
