Is it true that if a asteroid hit the moon we wouldn't see it until like a year after down here on earth? someone told me that when we look at the moon it is the past because how far away it is from the earth and how fast light travels.

er.. i know it would be a little delayed but an entire year? i dont think so.. i heard somewhere if the sun were to die out all of a sudden it would take only 8 hours for the light here to no longer exist. but thats light and travels much faster, so i dunno

haha in order for that to be possible the moon would have to be 1 light year away (the speed of which light travels in a year) 9,500,000,000,000 kilometers the moon is only ------------------------------>385000 kilometers from the earth just to put that in perspective.

Which means the next star from the sun is 4.3 light years away (40,850,000,000,000 kilometers).

What would ya'll do if you had 8 minutes to live, because the sun blew up?

You think it'd be 8 minutes? Shit's crazy when you think about it.

There are stars in the sky that went out 50 years ago and we're just seeing them dissolve now. It's amazing, when you think about it.

You're right. I would imagine many people would starve to death being that crops would freeze rather quickly. I guess it all depends on what part of the earth you are on. I look at it like this: The teprature drops when the sun goes down, from its peak position the drop is significant. I think it would never stop dropping and it would be a matter of a day or two before things start freezing. This is actually a greater question than I originally thought.

I'm officially changing the question in this thread to: Without the sun, which would happen first, starvation of fatal hypothermia?

Sorry scandal you have been bumped.

Just kidding man, I'm just adding extra spark to your thread.

what if the earth stopped turning though? would u rather be on the cold side (the side away from the side) or the side facing sun, or try to be right on the horizon/

Most of the stars we see in the night sky "died" much longer than 50 years ago.

About the sun going out you are all wrong. At the end of the suns lifetime it will actually expand, I believe to about Jupiter, burning everything in its path. So we will actually be burned to death rather instanteously, not frozen.

i agree, thats true, but i think we just meant hypothetically if the sun just "stopped giving light"...if it just stopped what would happen.

It'll actually expand up to Earth, then explode
