Is it pointless to make official music videos to other rappers songs?

Used to be that only certain rappers had a pass to get on other rappers beat and make it their own, not only has that changed, but now it seems like cats got music videos to songs that ain't even theirs. Especially rappers in the Bay. I feel like it's a waste of time and money to make an official music video to a song that ain't originally yours. That shit will never be on MTVBETVH1 shit TV in general.

It's the mixtape game bruh, a lot of people drop a dope song and as i can see from the people you posted their people who have video director's throwing video's at em. So it aint shit for them to do a dope vid to a mixtape song. Most the artist's i direct for pay for a beat, or make their own, THEN put it out as a single video.

Now a days MTV and VH-1 and BET don't even spin videos anyways. Youtube does every day and for free. When your an artist with a project thats for sale, a video is good to keep selling them, no matter if its an album or a mixtape. You want to push numbers.

But what does it accomplish? How does a video for a song that isn't theirs elevate what a rapper is trying to do? I mean unless these rappers got youtube accounts and get paid by their views and comments (ie Soulja Boy), they can't be making money off the shit. I just don't get the rationale besides just simply making a video for the hell of it.

@Mars MTV Jamz spins rap videos 24/7 365.

judging by the looks of those videos it didn't take long to make the shit....the only one that actually looked like they spent time & money is on the guce one cuz they got different locations and boats & shit. but the videographer need to invest in some lense filters, hella bad sun flares and shit. I didn't like what Damon Jamal did for Stevie Joe either....just hella akward cuts and out of focus shots. Aris Jerome's shit was the best.

these days people want in your life and videos keep them living wit you at least in there eyes.... Why spend thousands of dollars on a nice video when it doesn't get played on mtv or bet.... You can spend 200-500 on a alright video then spend 300-600 to get it on worldstar and ilovepwnage. Your saving money and getting your image and name out there to the masses... If its somebody else beat it somebody else beat. I wouldn't shoot hella videos to my exclusive music knowing there wasn't going to be a real push behind it.

@Localstar907 i feel what u saying...I think rappers that wanna go this route need to have a balance. If all you doing is remixing other rappers shit and making a video out of it you're being counterproductive. Yeah exposure is important, but it has to be done in the right way. Take J. Stalin for example.....every video he makes is aimed to potentially be on MTV. Even videos that have been on youtube for awhile are being re-edited and submitted ("Stop My Shine"). That's the right type of exposure. While Ya Boy, who arguably has a bigger internet following then Stalin, continuously wastes his time making videos that can't lead to anything beyond worldstar b/c they aren't his original shit. They both have access to the same directors, yet one is about to have 2-3 videos in the MTV Jams rotation, and the other is stuck on worldstar.

there are some beats that sound good to hear other rappers freestyle over.....but I think rappers have to realize that spitting some shit you wrote over someone elses beat is NOT a freestyle NOR is it a remix. and furthermore, if your "mixtape" is a cd that the songs are separated by gunshots, then it is neither a "mix" nor a "tape"

agreed but at the sametime ya-boy may not have the right team/push/money to take it there right now so he's just trying to stay in the public eye till he does..

the flip side is stalin has a stronger 'real' fanbase. stalin fans really buy his music and come to his shows. so he has more incentive to do real videos for his original music. ya boy despite the akon co sign and the la radio play is still trying to build it up

Videos are the best way to have your Internet Presence cuz people get to see you from their screens.. Videos have always been a Marketing thing wether it is a big/small budget, original/unoriginal.. What artist should do is find a way to distinguish themselves with their videos from everyone else
