Good post. Another thing that has killed hip hop is technology. Too many people without any musical skill or knowledge think they are the next big producer because they made a few beats on Fruity Loops. 10-15 years ago no one had access to a program like Fruity Loops because computers weren't as advanced and the internet wasn't as popular. Around that time when you listened to hip hop most of the time you could tell whoever was behind the production had some kind of musical skill. You dont hear chords, groovy basslines or any kinda soul in most hip hop today..the actual music has become less relivant and the 'image' of the artist has became more important.
I dont think technology killed hip hop man. If anything technology is giving the younger cats a chance to display some shit. Alot of the same dudes that dont use Frooty Loops and ACID and Reason and Pro Tools are the guys who have the money. All these dudes that used to make all this tight music u guys miss, where the fuck are they at?

I'm glad that all these PC programs came out though. I know what ur saying but the only producer that actually came up from using Fruity Loops is 9th Wonder. I've never heard of anybody trying to claim big shit from using the PC program. U cant fight technology.

Just like them motherfuckers that wanna say spinning cd's is wack. But hey, Not every DJ can afford to buy 8 to 10 dollar singles for every new hot song that come out. I've been to clubs where the DJ is a fuckin computer. U cant be mad at that either. Why not? Vinyl is great. But get ready to hurt them pockets if u tryin to be a club DJ.

Exactly! Ther's just no musical esssence in the production anymore. Even sampling funk and r&b on hooks has been reduced to sampling a quote from a rapper instead. The production nodays just isnt the same, everything is so techno.

Another PS.

The substance of the music has changed a lot. There's no meaning behind songs any more other than the typical "shake that ass" club song or "i slang dope" songs..

I agree with you ....but IMO its not so much the substance of all hip hop has changed, more than it is the perception of hip hop/rap to the general public.

I truly believe that the amount of quality music has not changed throughout the years, but the exposure that this quality music is getting has definitely decreased over the years, as hip hop became more popular and more of a business than an artform.

I don't see anything wrong with a Lil Jon club banger, in the clubs, theres nothing better, or a 50 Cent song talking about how much bread he has and people he's offed....

I feel like the problem is when people feel like thats all there is to hip hop music...

It's true that hip-hop isn't as good as it was before

But the whole "Hip-hop is dead" and "Hyphy/snap/trap/crunk is killing it" thing comes from those who are actually responsible for it not being what it used to be - these are the same people from NY (and not only NY) that haven't come with anything new and fresh and just keep redoing the same shit over and over with the little difference they not fresh any more and their style is just exhausted

Don't get me wrong, I will always like the late 80s/mid 90s material the most but the truth is that as minimalistic and materialistic the new styles are there's nothing better out there.

Hyphy, snap and trap were innovative and fresh when they first appeared. A lot of people forget that it doesn't matter how great lyricist you are when you rap over some tired bullshit.

I know some will say Atmopshere this, MF Doom that, Little Brother, Hiero and so on. All of them may be making some fairly good music but they ain't bringing anything new to the table. You can't deny it. Most of these artists sound like they either trying too hard (and usually unsuccessful) to make their shit just as if it was made in 93 or they go into some pointless weird shit that doesn't help either.

All those rappers form the past that are now legends became such because they were innovative and came with a fresh new style, with something different. That was what was driving hip-hop ahead.

Bottomline - if you're too concerned with new rappers lacking substance, you should do something about instead of just talking; reinvent yourself and make the people listen to you. You won't do that with preaching, make some hits. Create something new. Everything else is just some worthless talking shit

I feel you cuz Fruity Loops got me into music composition myself so I cant knock it too much but the problem Im seeing in the new sound of 'hip hop' is it all is starting to sound like music made off of Fruity Loops. In other words, musically hip hop is becoming more limited and the standards have been lowered extremely. So now you got a bunch of young cats tryin to make beats on FL but strivin for mediocrity because thats all you hear on TV or the radio. Fruity Loops has its advantages of letting people get experience of making music without spending much/any money but its also creating the next wave of wack "producers" because alot of people limit themselve from takin it to the next level.

I feel u man. I get on myspace to check all the unknown artists. I havent been impressed with anything yet. I understand that there is 100,000,000+ people on there, ofcourse i havent heard everything yet. But back to the beat making situation, I dont think it matters what people use anyway, cuz if its hot enough, it will get mastered anyway, so nobody will be able to tell the difference anyway. Fools just need to start knowing what sounds tight. Everybody is different though. Right now, i'm having hard times just putting a mix cd together, just some shit to bump in my ride. I'd hate to say it but the South is my cd player 70% of the time. If it aint the South music, its some WestCoast shit.

You make a good point, its not always what equipment your using, its the person behind it. But that also goes back to what I was sayin, people who aren't supposed to be makin music, are because its so easy to have access to a program like FL.
Anyways if you wanna check out some music on myspace that doesn't sound like some Fruity Loop shit check out my page..
