Ok, so Im jus bringin this convo over from another thread because I didnt want to take over dudes shit by changing subjects completely in it Lol...

quote from other thread:
"Now I'm a pretty intelligent guy... according to the state tests, Ive always ranked in the 90 percentile's in every subject... but Im also failing school as I have been since like 7th grade when homework loads started getting bigger... I wont do the homework cuz to be honest Im ADHD an just cant to sit an do it, but come test time I'll get one of the highest grade in the class with no hw or studying done what so ever..."

Zilla's post from other thread:
"if you had adhd you'd do just as poorly in test as you do in homework.. it's not selective.. especially if what you say about not studyin' is true.. a test takes longer than 2 seconds... HA... or is it? selective that is."

I dunno whats up with me lol... I physically CANT sit an do hours of homework... its like impossible... I cant keep on track an focused.. I hit the myspace or the celly an dont do shit productive...
But I can miss a whole week of school cuz Im at home sleepin in, then come back to biology the day before testing on DNA (the hardest unit of the year), get a quick summary about what my classmates had been workin on for the last week from the teacher, an still pass the test... It seems I can only focus if its something that interests me...
Example: Im really into my music... I can sit an write verses for days, but cant get thru a few hours of homework? I think my ADHD really is selective... but fuck taking medication for it.. I'd much rather learn to live with it then pop pills everyday to make me "normal" without knowing the long term side effects they may have on me down the road. Thats why I used to smoke weed... it calmed me down and allowed me to focus more, but now Im on probation an cant smoke cuz it really just isnt worth gettin locked up...

I know u guys arent doctors or psychiatrists, but I thought I'd bring up the topic of ADD/ADHD an see what your guys' views are on it... Anyone else have it, an how do you cope? Also, does it sound like thats what I even have? haha

Some of the most intelligent people have had ADD. Such as Albert Einstein, he failed miserably in school as well.

Your problem sounds like your mind isn't being stimulated enough with regular schoolwork and you lose interest. You're obviously learning the material, which is the point. But unfortunately your marks count mostly on effort. You can see many unintelligent people who get good marks in school, mainly because effort (and doing all that busy work) is a big part.

I too hated busy work, rarely did it and scored high on tests (without studying). My 12th year I actually did all my courses on my own, I did what's called Independent Study. An option that usually more advanced students choose, where you study straight from the textbook by yourself and the only marks you get are from tests taken. When I did this I scored in the 90 percentile in each course and finished in a 1/4 of the expected time. Some people don't do well in a classic classroom setting with constant busy work, it was too slow and boring for me.

i also was the smartest kid in class but couldnt bother with homework because just like the boy above me said , i wasnt being stimulated enough.

listen tho, if you have already failed some years and are gonna fail next year and if passing becomes completely hopeless then just get your GED and QUICKLY start college.

Yeah Im signing up for the California High School Proficiency Test to take in this June... Its like a GED but looks better because it's legally the same as a diploma. Once I pass it Im planning on enrolling in some general ed. classes at a CC till I figure out what I really wanna get into

I don't know if it is selective or not. My brother was diagnosed with ADHD but I have evidence that could show that it is selective. I have seen him focus for hours at a time on video games or on reading something he is actually interested in. I've seen him focus like anybody else at the gym. He also does very well on standardized tests and not too great in school. But there is obviously the potential to focus when he wants to.

I love that excuse: "I can't do my homework, schoolwork, or pay attention in class because I have ADHD." Yet these same people can sit on the internet, a video game, or the TV for hours on end. The way you treat school now will probably be the same way you treat a job in the future.

I dont think add is selective. Its just that people expect shit to be fun all the damn time. Thats BS some school work is just that plain and simply WORK.
Dont give yourself excuses to fail. I know that I can have the discipline to sit down and hit the books hard and heavy if I have to or bs around. most people with add adhd just need some self discipline. Stop the nonsense if and gain some discipline.

people with add/adhd can actualy play video games and or sit and watch the tv or be on the internet usualy alot longer then people without it, becuuse when ur watchin tv or playin video games ur in a passive state wich is one of the main problems wit add, when ur in class, people wit add will try to focus , but for me i always had an anxious feeling going throu-out my body, a warm annoying feeling, id constantly space off an go back in to that passive mode and not take anything in, even when its a class i really want to learn about and am interested in its extremly difficult for me to still stay focused on whats being taught and its damn near imposible for me not to space off in that enviroment of a class room , when i was in my resource class everything was alot easier to take in becuase it was a much more relaxing enviroment, since i was in kindegarden ive gotten complaints from my teachers sayin i always space off, i always got a million thoughts goin on at once and am extremly distracted, i used to be against takin medication too cuz i didnt trust it, but my counsler presuaded me that the cost benifet is alot higher for me to take medication, a person with anxiety or depression is gona take medication so that it wont interfier with their daily rutines, just like somebody with adhd is gona take medication so that it wont interfier with what they gota do to live life

The dude who came up with the idea of ADHD has clearly stated the diagnoses of ADHD has been taken way overboard and most diagnosed do not merit the diagonosis they recieve.
