I always thought a good marketing tool would be for a record label to open its on record store. Not only could they promote their shit in house, they can profit from record sales like a regular business. They could also have signings, sell merchandise, have shows, etc.; would be great promotion for bay area music in general and would bring bay area labels that much closer to each other.

..instead of opening burger shops

Excellent post. This issue is a trip to me because it's damn near a problem that only indie artists in the bay and the south face. I mean the south used to have Southwest and still does have Select-o-hits. In the bay people dist. have come and gone but a few remain constant. My question for you brothas is why not pool resources and start your own dist. company? I know cats have tried to do this on a grand scheme (eg. on some universal music group, Wea type level shit) but I dont know of any young black and latin people (i know all about bayside, i'm not talkin about that whole issue) that have tried to do it from a grassroots level. If anybody could do it, it's a bay cat. sellin out the trunk and consingnment is grass roots distribution, all it takes is contacts, patience and keen business sense to make it happen. Lace me with some game and let me know why this hasnt happened or tell me that it has and i'm just tardy to the party.

City Hall is still doin it...
UrbanLife is still doin it...

It takes a whole helluva lot more than patience, contacts, and biz sense. Retail has their own bag of tricks they play on distributors that makes it a tuff game.

Overall folks pay attention to they own needs...they wanna blow up and be rich and famous...not sit in an office conducting business all day...there aint no shine to distribution...niggas need shine

Big OOmp in atl did it and they do damn well in the south. Even before they signed a P and D deal with a major they did their thing for real on the indie tip and oomp got like 5 or 6 record stores and a tv show.

You got a valid point, I know all about city hall and what not. From my position in the game I have seen the tricks of the trade from retailers and dist. companies but at the end of the day all business is is relationships and money, all the other shit is irrelevant.

And as far as shine, thats a big part of our problem as a people, we wanna shine too much, rather be famous and a little rich than unseen and filthy rich. All niggas aint like that but way too many are.
