I'VE BEEN ASKING THIS QUESTION TO MYSELF FOR HELLA LONG? THE BAY GOT SO MUCH TALENT AND YET NO ONE IS SIGN TO A MAJOR LABEL. I TALKED TO JT THE BIGGA FIGGA AND I ASKED I HEARD HE WAS FUCKING WIT UNIVERSAL RECORDS. HE WAS LIKE I WAS BUT THEY TRYING TO CHEAP ME OUT ON HOW MUCH I MAKE ON EACH CD. THIS MAY BE TRUE

BUT LETS SAY HE PUTS OUT A CD UNDER GROUND AND SELLS 20,OOO AND MAKES 5 DOLLAS A CD. HE COULD MAKE WAY MORE ON THE MAINSTREAM. LETS SAY HE SIGNS A MAJOR DEAL AND HE PUTS OUT A CD AND SELLS 500,000 BECAUSE OF DECENT RADIO PLAY AND MAKES A 1.25 PER CD.

THEN HE DOES A TOUR AND MAKES 10,000 A SHOW BECAUSE OF A GOOD LINE UP. ALL THIS SHIT KEEPS ADDING IN MY HEAD AND IM THINKING WHAT ARE U DUMB. WHO CARES IF U DONT MAKE ASS MUCH PER CD U SELL YOU CAN MAKE UP FOR IT WIT LARGER AMOUNTS OF SALES AND TOURS.

IF YOU REALLY WANT THE BAY ON THE MAP YOU WOULD SIGN A MAJOR DEAL. YOU WILL GET THE BAY EXPOSED TO THE WORLD. REAL LEADERS WE GET THE FUCK OUT THE UNDERGROUND WORD . CAUSE YOU CAN'T SELL MAJOR UNITS UNDERGROUND AND GET RADIO PLAY LIKE FAT JOE. TIME IS MONEY SO WHEN IS SOME ONE GOING TO LEAD THE BAY TO THE TOP.

OUR ONLY CHANCES ARE ON THE SHOULDER OF THESE CATS RIGHT HERE YUKMOUTH , MR.KEE, E-40, AND SAN QUINN PERIOD AINT NO ONE ELSE DOING IT RIGHT.

JUST MY 2 CENTS

A-Wax and Yukmouth will soon take shit over in the bay blowing up also with the help of the FE family. Done Deal got a lot of tracks that they can edit a lil and get major radio play, they doin they thing as well....

I don't know too much in the Rap Game, but I believe money is whats stopping them. I mean Bay Artist are most likely still hustling and doin what they gotta do just to drop a cd.... So I guess I'll wait and See what some other people think before i add more of my thoughts.

Major labels feel the bay is just too wack to sign/
It's either they aint listenin' or maybe that they're blind/
Like the saying goes, "the best shall be last in line"/
Plus the road is rough and got a steeper path to climb/

major labels consider the bay area to be regional music.. they think we will never have what it takes to break our region so why waste money on someone who cant slein there own back yard..

only t hing we can do is get the radio back on our side by bringing good music to the table.. not quanity but quality.. dope shit.. some of us need to up the anty a lil and make nice radio songs tht fit kmel/wild 94.9 formats and roll wit the punches.. good luck though.. we all know bout that road.....

Money and power rules over everything. It doesn't matter how much talent we have, if we don't get the opportunities to showcase them nationwide, we aren't going to get big. Unfortunately, all of the money and power belongs to the Big Five major labels, none of which is located in the Bay and doesn't give a fuck about the Bay.

Matai's opinion

I know the Bay has hella talent! We just need to have that artist who can take us outta the shit hole they've got us in! It is so damn hard to get love out here man! Radio wont even give us no love! I thank the lord that I got on 94.9 the past couple of nights but it doesn't mean shit cause I know that was about it! I don't know what else is left to do to show labels and shit that we deserve another shot but it has to happen! I pray that we all get a shot!

Two things.... First, unless you have extraordinary talent (which 99% of the ones trying think they do but really don't, and that's just the honest truth.) then talent itself only plays a minor roll in the music business.

And secondly, you have to respect the game before it will respect you. I don't see a whole lot of that happening when it comes to the music business or the art of music itself. Too many people treat it like it's some sucka-ass little street hustle because that's all they know (I guess). Sorry homie, it's a full-blown multi-billion dollar industry and it doesn't work like that. For all these cats claiming they got so much hustle about themselves, it sure doesn't show as far as the rap game is concerned.

You can blame the lack of radio support all you want. You can blame everyone except yourself until your very last breath but if the shit ain't workin', maybe YOU ain't doing something right. Radio is merely a tool as are a lot of other things I see used as excuses for peoples failures. I hardly see anyone suggesting that maybe it's the music.

I'm not convinced that areas still can blow up anymore. Outside of Nelly & the St. Lunatics, can any of you name a single other rapper from St. Louis? How about naming two? How about Detroit? When someone mentions Detroit, I don't even think Eminem or D12, I think Awesome Dre.

A lot of cats don't seem to understand what the music business is all about in the first place. Nothing will change until peoples attitudes do.

Create you own buzz within your cities and towns. They will come to you if you have something worth putting their money into. But, the Bay is so two-faced that most artists just continue to hate on each other and fuck up shows and club venues. Also, muthafuckas think that their music is taking shit to tha "next level" but in reality, it's the same old shit done before. And another thing is you have to talk about something worth listening to. Lyrical content is huge. If you talk about the same old dope game hustle, pullin out your 9mm, etc... it's played out unless your delivery is unheard of. Don't get me wrong, some of the stupidest songs with the dumbest lyrics get played and signed to a major because the shit was just plain CATCHY. Look it Afroman, his shit was thrown together as a joke, but it was catchy enough to have everyone saying it and singing it and it worked. So, don't think too much about how and why, just wish you have some good luck to go with your talent, if you have any at all. Will someone please blow up from the Bay again, cause we all will at least get taken seriously from the so called industry, once someone else gets them to come back to the YAY. To the rest of you, wake up, it's not 1995 no more. Good Luck all and may all you cats be successful in your endeavors. Tha Unstoppable RHYTHMX-orcist $ickWid'It Records est1969

cuz hustling is the bay way, why be a soldier when u could be a general.......... true ud might make a better album signed, but you wont eat off of it...
Fozzit, you're the only person who has hit on the head so far.
The reason why Bay rappers ain't makin it big is because they choose to hustle their own shit.
Go out and ask your local rappers and you will find that they don't wanna sign to anyone else's label.
They wan't 100% of the money they earn, they don't wanna split it with no one else.
With this mentality, an artist will never blow up no matter how good he is.

Getting to the top ain't easy, you have to make sacrifices.
Even if you have to sign your life to some major label.
You have to look at it this way, at least you'll have a name for yourself. Once your contract is fulfilled, you'll have an audience willing to buy your independant product....

I'm not buying it that all these cats are hustlas to begin with. Real hustlas don't sit around whining and complaining about how shit ain't going their way. If you ain't moving any albums, what exactly are you 'hustling' homie? What's 100% of nothing (or almost nothing)? That's right man, NOTHING.

Most of these cats fail because they don't know the first thing about real hustle/business. They only think they do and unfortunately cats are too blind to see when they are in over their head.

ITS ALL ABOUT WHO YOU KNOW, NOT WHAT YOU KNOW! Feel me.

People don't realize the business side is way more important than havin good music. This game is 80% business and 20% talent. Ofcourse you gotta have talent but you also got to know how to solicite your music. These amatuers think hardheaded and think they Don Juan and they deserve millions. Please!
I've seen alot of talent where I'm from, but nobody knows about the business. First, you got to have a Manager or Agent if you want a Major Deal. (unless you know somebody in the biz).
Second, pay your dues and maybe somebody will notice you.
Not only the Bay but the whole west coast has alot of talent but nobody knows how to get it to the right people. All of us artists' need to approach the biz wit a bizness mantality not wit a street mantality.

This post is laughs. Almost every rapper in the bay swears up and down they are THE BEST. Then we got people thinking if one man blows up from the Bay, the whole Bay is gonna blow up right after....WRONG!! I've soaked up a lot of game over the past few years, and most cats out here got it all twisted. I'ma be blunt as fuck right here. The reason the majors look at the Bay and laugh is because we are responsible for the distribution of some of the shittiest music in the world, PERIOD!! I've heard underground from a lot of places, and a lot of those places are on the right track. The Bay Area, all you gotta do is have a place to record, some money for "BIG NAME FEATURES", and you get distribution. Every "solo album" out of this place has 20 million muthafuckaz on it, the main cat got 1 verse in each song and his shit is just what I said, SHIT!!

Let's get real for a moment here, even if it's just for one second. 98% of the underground artists from the Bay don't have what it takes to get a major deal. If they got the talent, they don't have the look, if they have the talent and the look they don't have the stage presence. Remember, most of the cats that are major right now are MARKETABLE. Eminem has the look, DMX has the look and the voice, Ja Rule (no matter how much his shit sucks in anybody's eyes), he's a little muthafucka wit a baby face and a deep ass raspy voice, THAT IS MARKETABLE!! Talent is NOT all it takes. Remember that song by C&C Music Factory? "Everybody Dance Now"....the girl who sang the hook on that song, wasn't the girl in the video. The girl who sang that song was in the group that sang "It's Raining Men", and she was quite large....NOT MARKETABLE!! See what I'm gettin at?? Dispose of the garbage, cats with talent WORK ON YOUR LOOK, video tape performances and learn from yourself to get that certain presence DOWN!! If you're tryin to sign to a major, drop the deep hardcore street shit, the majors don't want all that....my 2 pennies
