i dont think he was negative at all.

You definitely should have read the full post before you posted up anything, your extremely negative and condescending. You should educated yourself about the topic at hand thoroughly before you decide to drop in your two sense. Everything you said has already been brought up and discussed in a much more effective way. What you should have said is what not to do, why not to do it, and then give alternatives.
he was firmly stating what not to do. i agree with your philosophy but 99.9% of the individuals in the music business so to speak have absolotely no sense. you dont fall in that catagory.if your product is good and you have the drive, you can make things happen. dont be afraid to involve other people and create a team to help with your day to day operations. dont expect to make a quick buck, rather invest any profit right back into yourself. you have the right idea.

First and foremost, great thread, great ideas & great tips.. hands down.

I read through out this thread and am aware that it's about "SELLING".

BUT!!!! There is no point in selling, if the product is not up to par. The point to selling is to get the people to talk (word of mouth) & satisfaction. Yes, yes I know. Most of this is common sense & is repeated.

Bare with me. And let's be real.

99.9% of the time the music is garbage. And when anybody sells a "wack Cd" it affects everybody in the game, period. All the artwork, shrink wrap, etc etc..is like having a car with a candy paint job, interior & nice rims, but the car is in fact a lemon. When company's (let's say), like SONY. When they sell a product they sell a good one and step it up the next time around, so the consumer continues to buy. In other words, don't be proud cause you sold so many cd's. The real pay is when the people in fact start talking about it & demanding it / more.

I hate to be the guy to go against the grain, but the reality is: Rap artist in general need to step it up in the booth / studio and then step it up on what follows.

Just my 2, Folkz, just my 2.

i agree with you on this. but you also have to remember that what you consider good music someone else may not consider good music. solja boi sucks, but there is a market for that. There is an audience for his type of music. and his audience is telling him "you are amazing, i love your song" etc etc. so if your receiving such high praise and pay, why change wat your doing?

and thats the delima. its not the artists fault, the artist is going to make a product that they themselves like which isnt always wat the general population is going to like. its the audiences fault for letting it happen. dont buy whack shit, dont even play it to make fun of it, straight ignore it.

all im saying is, in general in my opinion, the majority of rappers are under the bar. but you cant blame the painter for making an ugly painting they think is legit, blame the people who look at it and buy it. tell them before you tell the artist cus idk about you but no matter how many people tell me i suck im still going to keep putting it out there because thats wat it takes to be successful.

Fair enough & agreeable, no doubt.

BUT!!!!

There are some that are just terrible and need to stop rapping. At the end of it all, this game is not for everybody. I recieved a free Cd and man, I thought it was a cruel joke they played on me. Damn awful.

With that being said, I don't believe in shoutting out, "Support local Hip Hop / music / artist" etc etc.. because not all of it is good music. That's real.

There is no fan base for garbage music, period.

Good POST. Im on the streets 24/7 sellin cds. No one trips off my color. What I love about it is while 97% of rappers hanG out on the siccness or various others sites acting like their selling, your actually selling cds. Your right though, what can you do in that first 10 seconds to reEl them in for the sale. They havent heard your music yet so they have to want to.

Good post.... Just have a good quality mixtape/street album, some headphones and a ipod. Cats should switch it up,if you go to rasputin in san lorenzo on a friday there's going to be 3 to 5 cats pushing there cd including king george. You will have to work ten times harder then they do just to make 5 if that... I know when somebody comes at me with a cd they made at home I do not buy. Why,just for the simple fact they don't take music serious as a art. Cats will by 40 sacs all day but wont put that money into there project. Don't make sense to me... Im bout to hope back out there in the next week or two and start pushing again. I never have pushed cds or try to in the bay or sac. I been living in the bay for two and just moved to sac yesterday so this will be new. When I stayed in Tacoma washington I was making any where from 50 to 100 bucks an hour no joke with just me and my boy out there pushing. Get out there and get it if you know your music is hot cause they money is out there. If your music is not hot and you know people are going to think wtf please don't do it cause it makes it hard on us real artist out there trying to make a living of this out the trunk shit 1

Great thread yall. I was beginning to think I was the only one still sellin CD's in the street. I agree with 408. While most cats sittin on the siccness, I'm in the streets. Sometimes I might post on the siccness from my bb just to make niggas think I'm at home chillin. I dont think that selling CD's in the street is anyone's long term goal but it better than sitting in the studio waiting for sales. THIS IS THE INDEPENDENT GAME!!! We gotta get out there and do it different than the majors. They make mass music for mass consumption. We cant do that. I just feel that street sales keep you in touch with the streets. Let's ppl know you aint just some joker sittin in the studio poppin shit. They see you in the streets and that goes a long way.

Like I said before, even if I was some big shot I would still want to spend some time in the streets pushin my shit. Interacting with the people. Watching reactions, getting direct positive (or negative) feedback. Aint nothing wrong with getting negative feedback. Pay attention to it, learn from it. Your music and hustle will improve.

Ive been using some of the ideas I read in this thread and my CD sales are increasing quick. Some ppl that didnt buy the CD went and copped the music on itunes too. I think the biggest help was selling multiple CDs at the same time. I can see it adds credibility and ppl can see you not out here bullshittin. Thanks to everybody that posted. Good game in this thread. Again sellin in the streets aint the end goal but it's better than sittin around waiting. I remember being in Berkeley in 2001 sellin CD's and bumpin into Messy Marv doin the same thing. I dont know if he still does it (i doubt it) but until you get to that point, playboy just get on out there.

THE 2010 VERSION OF THIS QUESTION IS:

"How do you get people to buy your shit on iTunes?"
I would imagine it would be the same as on the street...Ask for the sale. I've noticed that a lot of artists have their stuff on i-tunes and they have the little i-tunes logo on their webpage or whatever but they don't ask for the sale...and when I say "ask for the sale", I mean ask for it directly. Its going to naturally be harder for an unknown artist to sell more than an established artist, but I would like to see the up and comers push it more, especially considering the climate of the music industry today.

thats weird one thing with us, we sell more shit on iTunes than the streets.Just promote your shit on international music websites.

also.

if this is your first album, most likely you will not make much money off of it. 1st album you usually count it as a lost and call it an investment.

Like the people above said keep your shit lookin professional and don't sell a cd on the street for hella scrill. Also I bought some fools cd in frisco a while back he had the earphones for me to listen to first. Just found it it was officialbusinessent.com just a little free promotion. Also have more than ten tracks if you sellin it for cd price. That cd had 23 tracks and I think I bought it for 5 or 10 bucks but it was a mixtape.
