How important is the video

I just read a post from MDASH and on his signature he says something like: DOn't get caught up in all that false hype, videos, and other marketing shit...my stuff is the real life shit.

Its not a direct quote, but he did say not to get caught upin videos. I wonder how important a video is to people. Most regular hip-hop heads who watch cable music respond mainly to vidoes. When we talk about the changing of th game, videos I think are a big part of it. WIthout a good video, a song/label/album is hard pressed to sell. Especially since CMC used to play gangsta rap and then adandoned the hard core (same with MTV and BET).

How important is a vidoe to you getting a tape. Underground, I thought, means UNDERGROUND. If videos are THAT important then its gonna take a lot for "underground" acts to make it.

Videos might even be more important than radio. Damn.

The problem artists have is not making the video, but is getting the video played. CMC (who used to play a lot Bay) has now changed it's format to Top 40 videos..back in the day CMC would play all the bay videos..anything you could think of, but now seems like nobody plays bay videos...

It really comes down to the quality of the material...if the cd put out is tight and has major knocks....word will get around to people and the cd will sell on its own (it also don't hurt to promote)...you don't really need no video to sell a cd or tape...just put out good quality music...that's it...my 2 cents

if you are an indpendant label...the best bet is to make a low quality(by that i mean, just showin y'all on the street and stuff, no high-class effects or anything that will add money...) that is steady(the camera man ain't shakin the video all up) and making you album an ENHANCED CD...so it gives people a reason not to bootleg, because they'll be getting the video/videos with the cd

definately a good thing, but making a video and spending hella loot is gonna get you nothing but a welfare check

The question is really, "How important are the G's you dropped on that video that never got played?"

Makin' a video that will not get played is just throwin' money away. Until you get to the level that your video will actually be put in rotation, I don't recommend makin' a video.

Put that bread towards heavier street team promotion, tighter production, or whatever else you can think of.

That's exactly what I was going to say... IF you can get someone to show your video with some regularity, than it would most definately be worth an investment in videos. A decent video tends to smooth over short commings in a song and will have the song growing on the public.

BUT, with the current video market for independant labels, I think that it's money down the toilet...
