I wouldn't go this route unless I had a lot of paying customers pushing for it. If you get a 5.1 setup now and you don't have clients who want it, how will you recoup from your investment? If 24 bit, 96k 5.1 becomes the standard go for it when it is the standard.

SO WHAT'S THE WORD ON CONSUMERS gETTIN' 24/96?
If the general public demands 24/96 as a standard you'll start seeing more devices capable of playing it back. Since teh demand is not high amongst the general public you won't see a lot companies dumping millions into 24/96 products. Those who do dump money into those kinds of products usually have a niche demographic they are trying to hit.

When the public says "we want better sound" you will see a change. However the public has made a demand for QUANTITY instead of QUALITY, and you can look at Ipods and MP3 players for an example.

A lot of people have 24/96 playback on new computer systems with the latest codecs but even then its based on your hardware.

YOU THINK IS FAR-FETCHED, OR REALISTIC WITHIN' WHAT TIME?
Is what far fetched or realistic within what time? I don't understand the question.

AND OUT OF CURIOSITY, WHAT HAVE YOU HEARD?
Just jargon and rhetoric nothing of value.

THE 24/96 AS A STANDARD FOR CONSUMERS

You see more demands for smaller devices with larger storage capacities than demands for 24/96 as a standard. If you were to ask the average consumer about bits and resolutions it will fly over their heads, yet these people burn cd's almost everyday. The only way I can see it becoming a standard is when the demand is made. Even after the demand is made it will still take time to work out the kinks (copyright protection, playback compatibility etc) and take time to catch on.

AND CAN YOU SHARE SOME OF THAT JARgON?
That wouldnt be a good idea.

AND WHEN IS YOU RELEASIN' THAT COMP.?
summer 2006.

I cannot dictate how markets and technology fluctuate. 20 years from now 2400/9600 might be the standard made possible by advancements in recording and technology. I will say this for the last time. The STANDARD you are talking about is made by the PEOPLE. IF the people WANT/DEMAND it you will see it. If the people DON'T want/demand it the format will remain a niche for audiophilles and studio owners/engineers.

^ALRIgHT CUZZ, I gET YOU. YOU CAN'T FORESEE SHIT
In this instance no one can. Did people anticipate DVD's 20 years ago? Did people anticipate pro tools 20 years ago? People thought mini disc were the way to go and look what happened. People thought laser disc was the way to go and look what happened. The consumer demand now is SMALLER PHYSICAL DEVICES with LARGER storage. The average consumer is not concerned about fidelity (on a higher level) and can't tell the difference between an MP3 and an actual wav file.

Do you have any old cd or dvd players? If you do chances are these won't play back burned cds/dvds. What did companies start to do? They started to make cd players and dvd players compatible with the current media (dvd + and DVD - for example) because people demaned the ability to play back their shit. 20 years ago did you see cd turntables? No but as cd use increased, more dj's converted. Within the last ten years you have gone from 16/44.1 to 24/192. If you give it 20 more years who knows what the standard will be?

Personally I would prefer increased bit range/depth over increased sample rate.

Possibly dvd-a IF they can get copyright protection implemented, work out compatibility differences and create more hype for it. If that doesn't happen cd's will still be here as your major medium. But, you have to keep this in mind and it relates to copyright protection. If the big wigs complain about 16/44 being converted to a lower quality format (for trading purposes) what do you think they will do to protect a BETTER investment/technology like DVD-a?
