ROOTS OF THE HYPHY MOVEMENT

The Bay Area rap scene is witnessing its largest resurgence since the early 1990s. Like southern "crunk," the Bay Area "hyphy" phenomenon is a production style, dance and mind state sweeping the country. Popularized by locals E-40, the Federation and Keak Da Sneak, "hyphy" means "going dumb & gettin' loose." This panel will attempt to separate the popular drug elements of the hyphy movement from its social, political and musical roots.

Just 2 let y'all know it was a GOod turn-out. I missed the discussion but made it 4 some of the Q & A. Kevin Epps (director/creator of Straight Outta Hunter's Point) was in the buildin' as well. Trax had copies of "The Slap Addict" but wouldn't sell 'em (or give 'em out). He just flashed a few 4 the audience 2 see. Adisa is a nice gentleman. Fabby did his thing. Everyone did actually from whut I witnessed. TAMARA PALMER was the only speaker who didn't say anything when I was there. I'd like 2 see more of these events occur with more speakers and people in attendance. CSM (College of San Mateo) has a spacious auditorium 4 an event such as that 2 happen.

thats cool... i'm sure it was a really good event. adisa always drops knowledge, and he knows his street shit too.

these types of events are dope for the fact that it creates an open forum to have a community discourse about cultural movements within the community. and it also allows a bridge to be built between different generations and folks that would not normally enter such discussions. we need to see more events like this and more community involvement, cause like we know, our favorite bay artists are always rappin about the shitty conditions that they grew up in, but far too often do they neglect to do anything else about it. i know fab does his thing volunteering in oakland, i wish more folks would do the same.
