In like 1998 I was on my way to a studio and I was changing the radio station when I stumbled across the song. As soon as I heard it I thought to myself "this song is going to be a hit", but little did I know that it WAS a hit. At the time I heard it I can say I actually identified with the words, but thats the crazy thing about the song. What exactly is Layne saying? Is he asking God for help and getting a sarcastic and mockful reply by Jerry, or is the entire song mocking God?

Like when he says "Jesu Christ" is he calling for Jesus Christ or is he using it like a figure of speech like "Jesus man why don't you be quiet?"

The song just stuck with me and til this day it is one of my top 20 songs of all time.

I'm the man in the box
Buried in my shit
Won't you come and save me, save me

Feed my eyes, can you sew them shut?
Jesus Christ, deny your maker
He who tries, will be wasted
Feed my eyes now you've sewn them shut

I'm the dog who gets beat
Shove my nose in shit
Won't you come and save me, save me

Feed my eyes, can you sew them shut?
Jesus Christ, deny your maker
He who tries, will be wasted
Feed my eyes now you've sewn them shut

From interviews, articles and information coming straight from AIC this song refers to certain animals, such as the ones we eat, and how they are held captive their entire lives. They eat, sleep and die in their own shit, and they comsume only what they are given. They know nothing more than what they are shown which is relatively nothing. Of course, this is just the example used in the song but it relates to human beings as well.

As for the the words "Jesus Christ, deny your maker". It would seem that someone or something living under these conditions would not likely accept Jesus/God, given the fact that they are pretty much already living in hell.

Yeah I heard that explanation also, but I also read where Layne said he was high when he wrote the song and that it didn't mean much of anything. Then I read somewhere else that he and the guitarist co-wrote the song and that it was a spook/insult aimed at record execs who ate veal or something like that.
