correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it better to be independant than be on a major label? If you do all the work (produce, mix, master, market etc.) you keep all the royalties cuz you aint payin no one. The only downside is the lack of distribution and exposure that a major label has, but if you go mainstream you get most of the profit cuz you did all the work. So if a cd costs around $15 you get approximately that amount per unit sold. It seems an artist has to pay other people and at the end he/she is left with nothing because 1% here, 5% there, another 10% there etc. adds up. I know little about the business side of the music industry so I might be wrong, but it makes sense that hard work pays off literally when an artist is tryna get paid.
