I have to write a paper on the following:

"Cite what you consider to be two important contemporary contributions in the general field of sociology?"

Pretty simple, but in academia world what would you guys say constitutes a "contemporary" contribution? Do they want studies recently done in the past 5-10 years or so? Or you think a contemporary issue is anything that is still relevant and discussed?

I'd like to do something simple like Merton's theory of deviance and Domhoff's studies on the power elite, but this is stuff from like the 40's and 60's I think. Not sure if that's contemporary enough

So what do you guys think they mean by "contemporary"?

And this isn't for a class, but for a school. It's one of 5 essays I have to submit for potential admission

ps - If you guys know of any other message boards that could be more helpful, let me know. I tried searching for some but didn't really find anything. I know the siccness isn't the best place for this question, but for now it's all I've got

not to be mean but you graduated with a sociology degree, but can not figure out some contemporary topics?

you can go in the direction of: the current US Census (how they go about labeling a population), Pop Culture in society and its influence, current family structure, woman working, current social class ect ect ect

i hear you guys, but i know what contemporary literally means. and i know about current topics.

what im wondering is basically this: the concept of, say deviance, is something that is still currently discussed and debated right? so would a contribution on the study of deviance...ie, robert merton's, which is still currently taught, be considered contemporary even though it was made public like 50 years ago?

like i said earlier, i'd like to discuss deviance and power structure. and in relation to those i want to cite what i consider to be the huge contributions in those areas, but those huge contributions were made a long ass time ago. im wondering if because of their impact and the fact that they are still widely discussed that they would still fly as "contemporary" or if they're too old

I'm pretty sure when they say contemporary, they mean contributions that are still used/practiced today. I don't think they mean contributions only made in the late 20th or 21st century.

im thinking that too. but if we think in those terms can we then consider marx's conflict theory as a contemporary sociological contribution? initially i'd think that's too outdated to use, but it is still highly used/practiced today. i'd feel like it's too cliche to use, but if marx is fair game in the realm of contemporary it's kind of hard not mention his contribution

I'm guessing he's trying to get accepted into grad school.

As far as your question.

-"Definitions of contemporary on the Web:

characteristic of the present; "contemporary trends in design"; "the role of computers in modern-day medicine"
belonging to the present time; "contemporary leaders"
a person of nearly the same age as another
contemporaneous: occurring in the same period of time; "a rise in interest rates is often contemporaneous with an increase in inflation"; "the composer Salieri was contemporary with Mozart"

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...328&q=define:+contemporary&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g-c10
All definitions point to present issues. I would research some recent sociology findings and take it from there.
