well when you go to your tech school they will probably attempt to put you on some sort of lockdown if you live in the barracks with the rest of the bootcamps. if the school is long enough I'd try to get your wife and kid out there asap so you get into housing and they dont try to treat you like a Kid (as much). When I was in school they gave us a cerfiew for the first couple weeks we were there and we couldnt leave base untill we got qualified on their little BS barracks watch.
Yeah they got that phase program, but I think they made hella changes to it. Like, week 1 and two you gotta be in uniform at all times, and you got a 10 pm curfew everyday. week 3 and 4 you can wear civvies on weekends and you can stay out til midnight on weekends but you can't leave post or whatever. And then after that you can leave post and wear civvies off duty, but you still got a 10pm weeknight curfew and no curfew on weekends. I dunno, they might have changed that shit again.
I was in tech school for two years, and I been through 3 different changes in the phase program. That shit was no fun mayn, hella folks that I went to my first tech school with got out within a year. I got arrested at my 2nd tech school and so I lost pay and a stripe and had to go through the fuckin curfew shit all over again and lockdown on base and what not. Basically I was trying to get discharged cuz in tech school it's just an Admin no matter what you do (unless you kill somebody, or sell drugs shit like that) but them foos fucked me up and NJPd me and kept me in. I'm permanent party now, and it's a bit better, but the career field I'm in is pretty gay. You aint got as many dumb ass sergeants in your grill telling you this and that, but you still gotta put up with stupid ass rules that your own first sergeant will tell you he thinks are fucking retarded. The Air Force is headed to doing things like the Army, I think folks should just go green instead of blue.
The new GI bill is pretty koo tho. The Air Force is basically a big show mayn, like one of them dog shows. You just gotta realize it's a game, and then learn how to play that game and you'll be fine mayn. And if you ever get caught up in some bullshit, keep ya mouth shut and find an NCO that's actually looking out for his troops, cuz too many NCOs these days is just trynna cut muhfuckas throats freal. And if you ever run into trouble in tech school (the stats say you probably will) first thing don't say shit to Security Forces, and speak with ADC before you do anything else. Just like in the real world, your commander can't order you to tell him a damn thing.
So learn the game, get ya money for college, get ya pay check and that's it.
