Good Sample CDs for Percussion?

Do any of you guys know of any good sample CDs for percussion sounds (.wav format preferred)? Professionally arranged samples. I'm mainly looking for "Single-Shot" samples, not really loops because I prefer to create my own loops. Kicks, Snares, Claps, Hi-Hats, Open-Hats, shakers,....you know, the essential basics. I also want the sounds to be dry sounding for the most part (so no FX added) and when individually triggered I want only that one particular sound, to sound. For example, I think I have a decent collection of percusion sounds, but some of my best Kick drums have a hi-hat sound in them or some of my snares & claps have a bit too much reverb, so in some instances it's OK and usable, but in other cases it's not OK. BTW, I want my sounds mainly for Rap and RnB usage, so nothing way too acoustic/live or Rock sounding, I want my kicks to have some tightness and punch to them and snares/claps/rimshots to pop. Believe it or not, I find it hard to be happy with my percussion sounds even though I think I have a lot of them, I usually end up using the same damn few samples over and over, but sometimes just layering and EQ-in in different ways. So I think I might need more and better ones to work with.

BTW, I'm in San Diego so I have a GuitarCenter near by in Grossmont. Do any of you SD heads know if they carry pretty good sample stuff there? I don't want to spend too much, maybe $50 at max or unless it's like a rediculous good library or VSTi, perhaps I'll spend more.

Whats up homie.....I went to the one in Grossmont last week and picked up a Pro Sessions sample CD ...for 20 bucks..They got a pretty decent selection. They got sample Cd's that come in WAV. AIFF. REX..etc so you should be good there.
They also got some Big Fish Audio CD's that had a couple different versions for Percussion only. Most of the Cd's cost around $50-$80.... but ask if they got any on sale, or in the back. Thats how I got mine.

You might need to look a little harder for the one shot samples, most of the guys that work there, don't know shit about the sample CD's. I went there about a month ago, wanting sample libraries and they sent me home with shit that was all in loop form.

ill upload my collection for ya...i got some good shit......

i have a lot of drum kits that i got from RockItProductions website when i was a member a few years ago.....Showdown makes slaps and he sampled these drums himself from his own gear in his studio......

and i got the roland kit

should be enough for you to work wit till you buy your own samples.......

Hey INCHEZ, did you actually find any Single-Shot samples there at Guitar Center? Was that M-Audio Pro Session CD based on single shot samples or loops?

CcytzO_Loc, thanks a lot for that upload! Those samples are going to help A LOT. Their damn good. Their nicely organized and they sound good. This is the kind of sounds I'm looking for. Thanks again. :cool:


Hey HERESY, that BFD is good, but ain't that too acoustic sounding for HipHop/RnB? It sounds too LIVE I think, not sure if that's good. It sounds more suitable for Rock. You use it for HipHop? Those kicks just don't seem to have enough punch and those snares/claps don't seem to have that pop/snap sound that's good for Rap and RnB.

The M-Audio CD was mostly loops...I ended up getting a one shot library off of Ebay...couple good samples but not what I was really lookin for. they had too much reverb and the claps/snares/drums mostly had hi hats in em..

Let me know if find some good shit

aahh right, thanks for the heads up. I'll see what's up, I just really don't want no loops.

Nothing is too acoustic sounding for hip hop or r&b if you know how to tweek the patch. Thats what filters are for. Straight out the box they are designed for the music they sound like, but I posted those so you can check out the PERCUSSION ones. Did you check out the percussion ones on both pages?

It sounds too LIVE I think, not sure if that's good. It sounds more suitable for Rock.

BFD seems good of course, but that shit still cost some BANK. They still sound too "Live" for my taste. I know EQ, compression and what not can help, but d@mn, might as well just select a good sounding sample to begin with. Those samples that CcytzO_Loc posted are more like it, heavy, punchy, with a touch of synthsis as well.


BTW, HERESY, yeah I've seen both pages, I'm just not that much into Latin sounds.

You have a lot to learn my friend. Many of those sounds labeled "Latin" are not exclusive to "latin" culture or instruments. Basically what I'm telling you is I have many of those sounds and they aren't labeled as latin instruments/percussion.

As far as what the Ccytzo posted I didn't download what he uploaded, so I have no idea what they sound like. And there is no problem with selecting good sounds and rolling with it, but sooner or later you are going to want to make your own kits and patches.

yeah even wit those ones i uploaded i do a lot of compressing and eq'n or adding reverb or phase/flange fx cuz after a while it all starts soundin the same.....

Yeah, I undertstand that and I already do modifications. Only thing is I prefer to start off with a sound I like to begin with and from there see if I can alter it even more to my likings.

Yeah, that's exactly what I like to do also. But like I said in my last post, I like to modify sounds that I already like. I don't like to force anything, I mean if it sounds weak to begin with, I probably won't fuck with it that much. I'll rather start off with something that already sounds good enough to my ears and good enough for the style of music I'm making, then just go from there if I want to tweak it more.

Live/Acoustic drum samples aren't really very useful for your typical Hiphop producer, unless the producer really knows how to use those drums, or is a drummer themselves, and can manually do their own percussion, live, and record it properly, that's really the only way it works otherwise the shit doesn't sound right only two producers I've seen do it that's Just Blaze and Ryan Leslie and of course The Roots.

So if you know you can't process sampled live acoustic drums, that are more guided towards Rock music, then don't fuck with it, your beats won't bang!
