Warriors Sold For $450M, Ellison's Bid Beat Out

Joe Lacob, managing partner at private equity firm Kleiner Perkins, and Peter Guber, chairman of Mandalay Entertainment, have won the bid for the NBA's Golden State Warriors, a source close to the sale has told CNBC.

The purchase price is $450 million, beating out the previous record of $401 paid for the Suns.

-UPDATE: A source with knowledge of the purchase said that Joseph Lacob will definitely be the primary owner. Guber will be in a secondary role.

Very fast thoughts on Chris Cohan agreeing to sell the Warriors for a reported $450M to Joseph Lacob and Peter Guber… and not to Larry Ellison:

* Unless something bizarre happens, the Warriors will remain in the Bay Area.

There’s no indication that this group would spend all this money to move the team away from one of the richest, best markets in sports–particularly a market that has supported the W’s so well through constant losing.

* It’s a stunner that, in the end, Ellison didn’t win this bid because he possibly spent more money to win the America’s Cup than he offered for a whole NBA franchise and, if the difference in bids was $50M, that’s less than .02% of his reported wealth.

But from the beginning of the process, sources with knowledge of Ellison’s strategy warned that he would not overpay the W’s.

Some suggested that someone in Ellison’s place would fear paying a “Cohan Failure Bonus”–that an extravagant bid would be rewarding Cohan for failing, and for realizing that any change in ownership would instantly up the value because Cohan was such a terrible owner.

* I wonder now if Ellison will just go shopping for another NBA franchise and I wonder what the NBA would think of that.

* I’ve no doubt that Lacob, already a minority owner of the Celtics, will get league approval, presuming the financing is there and I believe it is.

Guber is known in sports-ownership circles, too.

But I also have zero doubt that commissioner David Stern wanted Ellison to win this–Stern, however, can’t tell Cohan who to pick and Stern, along with the rest of the owners, want the highest price possible to keep franchise values high.

* Lacob will have to sell his minority interest in the Celtics. At this point, that’s just pretty much a formality.

* I don’t know when Lacob and Guber will make their first public statements about the team and the direction they plan to take, but if they keep the current front office, they will be an immediate failure.

They could probably recover–the way Eddie DeBartolo recovered quickly after initially hiring Joe Thomas to run the 49ers after buying the team.

But Eddie D had Bill Walsh to turn to immediately. There aren’t many Walshes out there.

And it’d be a colossal misstep to keep Rowell, Riley and Nelson in place for any longer than a few weeks.

* Marcus Thompson II had this one nailed. He mentioned Lacob a few days ago, kept telling me Lacob was moving ahead, and last night told me he thought Lacob could probably win this thing soon.

Everybody had to wait, because you never know what Ellison will do, but MT-2 was on this. Then I heard early this morning–from someone who does not know Ellison–that I’d better get ready for an ownership change today.

As long as they clean house now, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt. I wanted Ellison to win it, but I think he was smart in not overpaying for this shithole of a franchise.

All I know is, Warriors fans deserved much better than what we've been getting.

I don't really like this sale, but when you want something bad enough, you gotta be careful what you ask for. Obviously Larry Ellison is a smart man, and wasn't gonna let Cohan abuse his power or try to pinch him for every dollar he could for a franchise that isn't worth it's weight in Gold. This move could mean, a move out of the Bay for sure. It's not about the fans, it's more about having the team in a area that will generate high national ratings. Let's keep in mind that we are not a team high on the list of potential free agents (Case and point KG and more recently Stoudemire), instead we get overrated players eager to take the money from a franchise desperate enough to spend high and expect much of nothing for what they have paid (Again Case and point Adonal Foyle, Corey Magette and I hope I'm wrong but now David Lee). And at the cost of buying this franchise, sooner or later, you better expect the price of tickets to go up. Somebody gotta take the weight from paying and overly bloated price for the Warriors

moving the team would hurt them not help. we have 1 of the best markets and strongest followings - even with a retarded cohan owner who many fans boycotted.

and at Chree - ur an idiot. the mavs were turned around FASST by Cuban, they used to be as bad as the clippers every year. the kings have been up and down but were a playoff team with webber and peja, they are building strong once again with tyreke.

and being from vegas (or anywhere else) has nothing to do with or without success.

theres 2 things that will stop the the warriors from leaving the bay area...
the nba will never approve the warriors leaving the bay area
the nba will never approve of a team in Vegas especially after the douneghy scandal...

Regardless what anybody thinks (Personal opinions or facts), we will soon find out if this was a good or bad decision. And if money is no issue, you got the heart to pay more than the team is worth, then let your first order of business be to fire Nelson, even if you have to pay him a full seasons worth of pay to do it. If you want to show commitment to change, then it starts at the top.

Presumptive favorite Larry Ellison just issued a statement reacting to the news that the Warriors had been sold to Joseph Lacob and Peter Guber, and it’s a doozy.

Headline: Ellison says he was the highest bidder, but still didn’t get the team. We’ll hear more about this.

The statement…

Larry Ellison Confirms he is Not Buying Golden State Warriors

Larry Ellison confirmed today he is not purchasing the Golden State Warriors.
Despite Ellison making the highest monetary bid, current owner Chris Cohan has selected a different offer.

“Although I was the highest bidder, Chris Cohan decided to sell to someone else. In my experience this is a bit unusual. Nonetheless, I wish the Warriors and their fans nothing but success under their new ownership,” said Larry Ellison.
