A Detroit mother and son were convicted of second-degree murder this afternoon for killing a bystander after a recreation center scuffle.

A Wayne County Circuit Court jury took less than half a day to convict Tarranisha Davis, 37, after a trial before Judge Daniel Ryan.

Less than two hours later, Ryan convicted her son, Traimaine, 15, of second-degree murder in a bench trial. The youth was tried as an adult.

Mother and son face maximum life sentences, plus an additional mandatory two-year term for using a firearm.

The Davises were charged with first-degree murder for the October fatal shooting of Dmitri Jackson, 19, at the Considine Little Rock Recreation Center in Detroit

Witnesses said Tremaine Davis got into an after-school ruckus with other teenagers at the center and was knocked to the ground.

Prosecutor Lisa Lindsey said Tarranisha Davis insisted that her son not let the incident pass. The mother met her son at the center and popped the hood of her van so he could retrieve a .32-cal. revolver she’d hidden there.

Tremaine Davis fired three or four shots into a crowd of youths, hitting Jackson, who had not been involved in the earlier incident.
