DECENT MONEY FOR MEWELDE

We've tracked down the terms of running back Mewelde Moore's three-year deal with the Steelers.

Per a source with knowledge of the deal, Moore will receive a signing bonus of $1.35 million, along with base salaries of $650,000 in 2008, $1.475 million in 2009, amd $1.475 million in 2010.

Moore is expected to serve as the Steelers' third-down back, and he also is due to help out in the return game, given the departure of Allen Rossum.

The arrival of Moore also casts doubt on the future of Najeh "Dookie" Davenport. He is signed through 2008, and he's due to earn a base salary of $1 million this season.

We're also told that the Bucs were pursuing Moore, and that other teams expressed interest after Moore focused on the Steelers.

DUCKETT SIGNS WITH SEAHAWKS by Michael David Smith

Free agent running back T.J. Duckett has signed a five-year contract with the Seattle Seahawks, SpartanNation.com is reporting.

Duckett, a 6-foot, 254-pounder, carried 65 times for 335 yards and three touchdowns last year as a backup for the Detroit Lions. The Seahawks will be his fourth team in the last four seasons; he spent 2006 with the Washington Redskins and played for four years before that with the Atlanta Falcons.

The addition of Duckett in Seattle will raise more questions about whether Shaun Alexander is done with the Seahawks. Although Alexander is only two years removed from an MVP season, he has averaged just three and a half yards a carry the last two years, and he'll turn 31 before the 2008 season begins.

JETS CONTINUE MAKING TRANSACTIONS

The New York Jets have announced that they have signed cornerback Andre Woolfolk, and that they have cut starting right tackle Anthony Clement.

Clement was signed by the Jets in 2006, and he started 32 regular-season games and one postseason game in New York. He likely will be replaced by free-agent acquisition Damien Woody.

Woolfolk was a first-round pick of the Titans in 2003, but was out of football in 2007.

Meanwhile, the free-agent splurge that resulted in the payment of more than $67 million in guaranteed money on contracts with a maximum value of $137.75 million is raising eyebrows around the league, especially since it's a dramatic departure from G.M. Mike Tannenbaum's professed approach to building a team.

Said Tannenbaum in February 2007: "Our core philosophy is to build the team through the draft and develop our own players, building the team as much as we can from inside."

As to the practice of signing free agents to big-money deals, Tannenbaum said, "There are consequences."

It's possible, in our view, that Tannenbaum opted to change his approach after watching the Patriots get so much better after making a big splash in free agency last year. Regardless, the Jets' seemingly desperate attempt to acquire veteran players doesn't fit with the philosophy, and we wonder whether the change resulted from a fear that an underachieving team could trigger the ultimate consequences for Tannenbaum and coach Eric Mangini -- termination of employment.

Patriots start to rebuild secondary by signing CB Webster

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP)—With cornerbacks Asante Samuel and Randall Gay leaving as free agents, the New England Patriots began rebuilding their secondary on Tuesday by signing cornerback Jason Webster.
The 5-foot-9, 187-pound Webster has 393 tackles and 11 interceptions in 87 career games, 74 of them starts.
He played in one game last season for Buffalo before being placed on the reserve/injured list with an arm injury on Sept. 13.
The eight-year veteran was a second-round draft pick of San Francisco in 2000 and played four years with the 49ers before signing as a free agent with Atlanta, where he played for three years.
Patriots coach Bill Belichick says Webster is “an experienced veteran who will add good depth to our secondary.

fuck it better than nothing. i know we going for a d-back in the draft as well

Patriots sign special teams star from Buffalo

Feeling it was a prime opportunity to boost their special teams units, the New England Patriots contacted Buffalo Bills receiver Sam Aiken shortly after free agency began last Friday. Aiken was flattered by the early interest according to the Boston Globe.
"Coach [Bill] Belichick reached out at around 11 that morning, and that was a big deal to him," said Alvin Keels, Aiken's agent. "That call made him feel like the Patriots really wanted him."
Monday the sides finalized a two-year contract that could be worth a maximum of $2 million if Aiken reaches all incentives. The 6-foot-2-inch, 215-pound Aiken flew into town Sunday. He projects to be a core member of the special teams units, which probably means, among other things, filling the challenging role of gunner on punt coverage. The gunner lines up on the outside and often must beat two opponents while covering a punt.

BROWNS LOOKING AT JOSEPH by Michael David Smith

The Cleveland Browns are showing interest in free agent defensive tackle William Joseph, who will visit with the team on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-5, 308-pound Joseph was the Giants' first-round draft pick in 2003 and has undeniable talent. But he's been plagued by injuries throughout his career, and he missed all of 2007 with a back injury.

For the Browns, signing Joseph would be another move to bolster their defensive line, and a much less costly move than the trades for defensive tackles Corey Williams and Shaun Rogers. Although Joseph has mostly been a tackle during his NFL career, he's a versatile enough athlete that he could be a good fit as a 3-4 end in the Browns' scheme.

FREAK RETURNING TO TITANS? by Michael David Smith

Free agent defensive end Jevon Kearse may be looking to return to the place where his NFL career began.

Kearse, who spent the first five years of his NFL career with the Tennessee Titans and the last four with the Philadelphia Eagles, will visit the Titans Wednesday. Tennessee could use a defensive end, after watching free agents Antwan Odom and Travis Laboy sign elsewhere.

If Kearse doesn't sign with the Titans Wednesday, he will pay a visit to Minnesota on Thursday. The Vikings also need a defensive end; they wanted Odom before he signed with the Bengals and wanted former Bengal Justin Smith before he signed with the 49ers.

Kearse took the league by storm after the Titans chose him in the first round of the 1999 draft, when he had 14.5 sacks and was the NFL's defensive rookie of the year. He then had 11.5 sacks in 2000 and 10 sacks in 2001. But he has struggled with injuries and has yet to record a double-digit sack season since 2001.

In 2007 Kearse continued to struggle with the knee injury that forced him to miss 14 games of 2006, and he was taken out of the starting lineup halfway through the season. Still, the Titans and Vikings apparently think he has enough tread left on the tire to, at least, be an effective situational pass rusher in 2008.

GAFFNEY BACK TO THE PATS

A few days ago, the Patriots looked to be in danger of losing receivers Randy Moss and Jabar Gaffney. Now, they're both under contract again.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, Gaffney has agreed to terms on a one-year, $2 million contract.

In 2007, Gaffney was fourth on the team in receiving yards, fifth in receptions, and fourth in receiving touchdowns.

BEARS OPT NOT TO MATCH KENNEDY OFFER

On the same day that word broke that the Jags signed defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy to an offer sheet, the Bears opted not to match it.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, the Bears made their decision on Tuesday, and Kennedy is now a Jaguar.

The one-time first-round pick will get a chance to rejuvenate his disappointing career by working his way into the tackle rotation with the Jags, who need help now that Marcus Stroud has been traded to the Bills.
