Friday's roundup: Browns to acquire DT Williams
NFL.com Wire Reports

NFL Network's Adam Schefter is reporting that the Cleveland Browns will trade their 2008 second-round pick to Green Bay for defensive tackle Corey Williams. Cleveland then will agree to a deal with Williams that pays him $18 million in guaranteed money and $23 million in the first three years of the deal.

Williams had been tagged last week as Green Bay's franchise player. He played in all 16 games, including nine starts, in 2007 and set career highs with 51 tackles and 32 solo stops. He tied his career high with seven sacks.

^^nice pick up. Funny though cuz berrian is upset about the QB problems in chicago, but I don't know why he thinks it will be much better in MN. Although it's probably more about money than anything else, so I understand.

On a side note, Hester currently is the #1 receiver in chicago, haha, fuck. Berrian is gone, same with Mushin Mohammad. That leaves Hester and Bradley. They might as well completely abandon offense and just play defense and special teams all game long. Just punt as soon as they get the ball, lol

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Carolina Panthers traded three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kris Jenkins to the New York Jets on Friday for third- and fifth-round draft picks.

The Jets then came to terms with Jenkins on a new five-year contract worth $35 million, including $20 million in guaranteed money.

The deal on Friday ends a tumultuous year for Jenkins. He was also placed on the trading block last year and had angered the coaching staff for being overweight and missing offseason workouts.

Jenkins played in all 16 games last season, but had only 2 1/2 sacks. Near the end of the season he said he wasn't sure if he wanted to return to Carolina.

At 6-foot-4 and listed at 349 pounds, Jenkins could move to nose tackle in the Jets' 3-4 defensive scheme.

"Kris is extremely excited to be going to New York," said Jenkins' agent, Tony Paige. "He leaves Carolina with no malice or anything like that and is grateful they drafted him and gave him a chance to play. He had a lot of great memories there."

The Panthers, looking to fill several needs after two straight seasons out of the playoffs, coveted extra draft picks. The Panthers had given up their fifth-round pick last summer when they acquired safety Chris Harris from the Chicago Bears.

The Panthers could turn to the draft or free agency to replace Jenkins, who was Carolina's second-round pick in 2001.

With free agency beginning Friday, the Panthers have shown interest in Atlanta defensive tackle Rod Coleman. Damione Lewis, who has been a backup defensive tackle with Carolina, recently re-signed and could move into the starting lineup.

The trade continues a busy offseason for the Panthers, who are retooling their roster after consecutive seasons out of the playoffs. Jenkins joins veterans Dan Morgan, DeShaun Foster, Mike Wahle and David Carr who have been let go in the past month.

By sending Jenkins to New York, the Panthers avoid paying a $1 million roster bonus and clear about $3 million in salary-cap space. Jenkins was scheduled to make about $6.7 million in base salary over the next two seasons under his old contract.

The Jets hope Jenkins can regain the form that made him one of the NFL's top defensive tackles before missing most of the 2004 and '05 seasons with injuries.

Jenkins came back in 2006 and made the Pro Bowl, but his constant weight problems disappointed the coaching staff.

After the Panthers failed to trade him during last year's draft, Jenkins was the only starter to miss June's voluntary workouts and his agent said he wanted a new contract.

The 28-year-old Jenkins didn't get a new deal, but he showed up at training camp and was the best player on a disappointing defensive line. Still, Jenkins irritated some in the organization when he questioned his teammates' passion after a loss to Tampa Bay early in the season.

Paige said he was allowed to try to broker a trade for Jenkins since the end of the season. He said Cincinnati, Buffalo and Denver also showed interest.

"We are glad to finally get it done," Paige said.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Linebacker Kawika Mitchell reached an agreement with the Buffalo Bills on Friday, cashing in on the first day of NFL free agency after playing on a Super Bowl winner with the New York Giants.

The five-year veteran started all 16 games for the Giants last season after being the team's only notable free-agent addition a year ago. He finished with 87 tackles, 3 1/2 sacks and an interception, which he returned for a touchdown against the Bills.

He also had a fumble return for a TD and added two sacks in four playoff games, including one in the Giants' Super Bowl win over New England.

The Bills confirmed that a verbal agreement had been reached, but provided no further details.

Mitchell bolsters a young and injury-depleted linebacker corps in Buffalo. He's expected to round out a starting unit of returning veteran Angelo Crowell and second-round draft pick Paul Posluszny, who missed the final 13 games of his rookie season after breaking his forearm.

Selected in the second round of the 2003 draft by Kansas City, Mitchell became a full-time starter midway through his rookie season. He spent four years with the Chiefs before signing a one-year deal with the Giants.

Mitchell is coming off his best season, and benefited from opponents double-teaming the Giants star defensive ends. He did show resilience, bouncing back from a sprained knee sustained in New York's season-finale against New England, to play at Tampa Bay in New York's NFC Wild-Card playoff-opener the following week.

The Bills, coming off their second straight 7-9 finish, turned their attention to defense this offseason after their unit finished 31st in the league in yards allowed, 30th in sacks and 29th in both first-downs allowed and third-down efficiency last season.

Last year, Buffalo concentrated on improving its offense, signing guard Derrick Dockery and tackle Langston Walker to contracts worth a combined $74 million on the first day of free agency.

Free agent: QB Derek Anderson
Best fit: Minnesota Vikings
Here's why: The Vikings have plenty of offseason needs, but adding a quarterback who can consistently make plays would alleviate some of the other issues. With Adrian Peterson in the fold, the Vikings will always be a run-first offense. That suits Anderson extremely well. While he was very impressive last season and has a big arm, Anderson is a glorified caretaker behind center. His greatest strength is protecting the football. Minnesota needs a good decision-maker who can make all the throws, and that's exactly what Anderson does. Tarvaris Jackson has only 16 career starts, but his accuracy and decision making is holding the Vikings back. The Browns tendered Anderson, meaning it would cost a first- and third-round pick for someone to sign him so it is unlikely he moves, but he's someone who could immediately help Minnesota.

**EDIT** He just resigned with Cleveland

FYI – there’s a rumor going around that we still may trade Anderson…especially since we don’t have a 1st (Quinn) or 2nd (Corey Williams, if true) in this years draft.

BENGALS BAG ROGERS by Michael David Smith

Michael Smith of ESPN.com is reporting that the Detroit Lions have traded defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to the Cincinnati Bengals.

No word is out yet on what the Lions got for Rogers, who had been on the trade block for several weeks and had been rumored to be heading to the Jaguars, Jets and Broncos, among other teams.

For the Bengals, acquiring Rogers gives them just the kind of big defensive tackle head coach Marvin Lewis has always employed in his defense. The 340-pound Rogers is in the mold of Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa, the huge defensive tackles who played for the Super Bowl-winning Ravens team on which Lewis served as defensive coordinator.

BEARS LOOK TO TRADE GRIESE by Michael David Smith

The Chicago Bears have given quarterback Brian Griese permission to seek a trade, the team says on its web site.

After the Bears reached contract agreements with Kyle Orton and Rex Grossman, Griese is the odd man out. The Bears are likely to acquire a third quarterback in the draft or free agency.

Griese is owed a $300,000 roster bonus next week, and it is presumed that the Bears will cut him before then if no team steps forward to offer something up in a trade.

Meanwhile, the Bears also say they're not going to break the bank in free agency.

"The thing that you have to do is you have to create sobriety in the marketplace," General Manager Jerry Angelo said. "Because you have the money doesn't mean you have to spend all the money."

DOLPHINS ADD TORBOR, WILFORD, STARKS by Michael David Smith

No team has gotten off to a faster start to the free agency period than the Miami Dolphins, who have added two more players to their defense and one to their offense this afternoon.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel is reporting that the Dolphins have signed free agent linebacker Reggie Torbor, previously of the Giants.

Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the Dolphins have signed free agent defensive tackle Randy Starks, previously of the Titans.

And the Miami Herald is reporting that the Dolphins have agreed to terms with free agent wide receiver Ernest Wilford, previously of the Jaguars.

Bill Parcells, the new boss in Miami, has vowed to remake the Dolphins' roster. And he's not wasting any time.

Various media reports, collected and referenced by our good friends at SportingNews.com, indicate that cornerback Asante Samuel will indeed sign a contract with the Eagles on Friday.

It's reportedly a five-year, $47.2 million deal. To the casual fan, that's short of the $10 million per year average from the eight-year, $80 million deal signed last year by Nate Clements of the 49ers. As everyone in PFT Planet knows, the Clements deal is actually seven years and $64 million, making it worth a hair over $9 million per year.

Samuel's deal carries an average of nearly $9.5 million. They could have added a phony final year that would have pushed the average to $10 million per year or more, and we respect both sides for doing what looks to be a "real" deal.

Also, there's a certain irony regarding the five-year duration of the contract. Typically, the Eagles like to lock players up for looooong periods of time. As it now stands, Samuel's deal will expire before the contracts signed by some of the young players who cashed in early.
