googled it right quick and came up with this..
What is a Flexplay® DVD?
A Flexplay DVD is a time-limited DVD similar to a conventional DVD, except that it has a pre-set viewing period that begins when the disc is removed from its packaging. During this viewingperiod, the Flexplay DVD plays like a standard DVD, and offers the same great picture and sound that viewers expect from their DVDs. After this viewing period expires, the disc will no longer be readable by the DVD player.
How does Flexplay's technology work?
All DVDs are optically read via a laser beam. The laser beam focuses through the surface of the disc onto an information layer, and is then reflected back to the DVD player's photo detectors. Because DVDs are optically read, the clarity and transmission of light through the disc's surface are critical to playback performance. Flexplay has developed a proprietary process that makes a DVD unreadable by the DVD player's laser beam after a pre-determined time period lapses.
How does a Flexplay DVD compare to a standard DVD?
A Flexplay DVD is designed to work in all DVD players, DVD drives and gaming systems designed to accept a standard DVD. The quality of the Flexplay DVD is indistinguishable from a standard DVD, offering the same great sound and picture quality.
Will a Flexplay DVD maintain its quality throughout the viewing window?
A Flexplay DVD is designed to play for s 2 days after the disc’s sealed package is opened , and will maintain its impeccable picture and sound integrity during this viewingperiod. There is no restriction on how many times the Flexplay DVD can be played during the 2-day viewing period. The viewing window begins when the consumer opens the package and exposes the Flexplay DVD to air. A Flexplay DVD can be watched as many times as a consumer wants during the pre-set viewing window.
Can a Flexplay enabled disc be recycled?
Flexplay® discs are safe for standard recycling. Flexplay has partnered with environmentally-friendly recyclers, plastics suppliers, and selected retailers to implement several closed-loop recycling options including consumer mail-in, pre-paid postage options and collection points through local environmental organizations. For more information, please visit the Recycling Programs page.
What are the potential uses for the recycled plastic?
Recycled polycarbonate (the plastic used in DVDs, including Flexplay DVDs) is used in several industries, including automotive, computer, consumer electronics and telecommunications. In addition, Flexplay is working with its plastics suppliers to actually use recycled polycarbonate plastic – what the industry calls “re-grind” – to make Flexplay DVDs. If successful, Flexplay will be the first manufacturer to use “re-grind” to make optical discs and create a true closed-loop recycling program.
Are Flexplay enabled discs safe?
Flexplay discs are completely safe for consumers and the environment, and they conform to the applicable EPA health and environmental standards.
