Fedor goes the Mayweather route, wants strict drug testing for Strikeforce GP
By Steve Cofield
Floyd Mayweather made headlines in 2010 by insisting on Olympic-style drug testing for all his opponents. Shane Mosley agreed to the terms. Manny Pacquiao still hasn't. The boxer wants to ensure a level playing field. M-1 Global, the management team for MMA star Fedor Emelianenko, never used the term "Olympic-style," but it sure sent a similar message during a press conference today in Moscow.

"Two out of eight fighters in the (Strikeforce heavyweight) tournament previously failed a drug test. Obviously, I'm talking about Josh Barnett and Antonio Silva," said Fedor's manager Vadim Finkelchtein.

"We want fair competition for everyone, so that's why I will ask the commission to perform a strict drug testing. Fedor is not using any kind of substance to enhance his performance, and will be ready for any kind of testing. So if the commission decides to follow our suggestion, we'll be ready."

Fedor often refers to Barnett as a good friend, but it's clear there's still some lingering resentment from the American's last positive drug test.

"We have never shied away from a particular battle, I just want for his fighter to be professional opponent, not a chemist. Today doping can significantly add speed and endurance. We just want all parties to the Grand Prix and potential rivals to play by the rules," Finkelchtein said. "Our organization paid a heavy price after the cancelation of the fight between Josh Barnett and Fedor. We did a lot of promotion for this fight, which in the end did not take place. That's why as a promoter and manager, I don't want this to happen ever again."

Barnett is on the other side of the bracket in Strikeforce's heavyweight Grand Prix. The only way the fighters could meet is in the finals tentatively scheduled for late 2011. It's still not a certainty Barnett is a lock for the tourney. He appeal and re-instatment process in California has dragged on for months. The fighter is now planning on skipping the next hearing in the Golden State. The California State Athletic Commission is planning on ruling on Barnett's license either way.

During the presser, M-1 management also talked about Fedor's new three-fight deal which is more of a three-way pact with M-1, Strikeforce and Showtime. Last time around it was just M-1 and Strikeforce. Finkelchtein hopes to announce a Showtime deal to televise four or five M-1 fight cards in the next month

The only reason why I made a thread for this is to compare it to Mayweather's demand for Olympic style testing.

Discuss.

I can't believe I'm going to defend M-1 Global on this but:

M-1 never publicly stated they wanted "Olympic Style Drug Testing".... the articles that were written from MMA news websites all point to Josh Gross's twitter saying that he heard M-1 saying that.

Don't know where you guys come from, but hearsay from a twitter post isn't exactly what I call "legitimate journalistic proof".

People are just desperate to put Fedor in the same category as Mayweather.

Good post Morebass, you're looking like you're becoming more and more unbiased bro.... I'm proud of you. Even though you're a Pacquiao fan, I remember you saying you wouldn've taken the blood test too. A lot of people would have.

All Floyd wanted was Pacquiao to take a blood test because "FLOYD" thinks that Pacquiao is on something.... that was the only road block.

Now Fedor is doing the samething, lets see if he gets slammed and called a "ducker" for wanted his opponents to go through the strictest of blood test.

^ LOL. Tony, You're missing the point of me posting this.

It is reasonable for Fedor's team to want additional testing, as two of the 8 fighters in the tournament have actually tested positive for banned substances in the past...actually on multiple ocassions.

Floyd on the other hand, doesn't have a shred of evidence.

Can you see the difference here?

No one is going to look at M1 or Fedor's team and say they look like chicken shit pussies...

Why?

Because they can substantiate their claims.

Damn, just when I gave you some credit you take it away....

Yeah I see that those fighters "previously" failed a drug test, yeah that's the "only" difference but it's still the same principal. Fedor and Floyd both want their opponents drug tested before they fight, not after. 206 provided a list of boxers that failed drug tests, not too long ago.

"We want fair competition for everyone, so that's why I will ask the commission to perform a strict drug testing. Fedor is not using any kind of substance to enhance his performance, and will be ready for any kind of testing. So if the commission decides to follow our suggestion, we'll be ready."

^^^^^^=The same point that Floyd was makin' but Floyd got called a coward, scared, etc...

That's the ONLY difference?

You say that like its some moot point.

The principal is completely different Tony. There is no principal behind Floyd's demands. Any fool can see this.

The point I'm making is that if Floyd had any base to his argument, he wouldn't have recieved the backlash for it. Just like M1 and Fedor's team likely aren't going to be getting any over this.

Well then it looks like we disagree.... to me it's the same story, different book.

Fedor is asking for the strictest of blood test because some Strikeforce fighters have been busted for cheating.

Floyd is asking for the strictest of blood test because some boxers have been busted for cheating.

You're saying it's ok for Fedor to ask for it because some of those fighters previously tested posititve and since Pacquiao (even though other boxers and professional athletes have) never tested positive, it's not ok for Floyd to ask him to get his blood tested. I get what you're saying, I just don't agree with it.

Fedor and Floyd are both concerned and that's why they asking for the strictest doping test that they can get. They both want to make sure they're not fighting a doped up fighter.

tony you also leave out pacquiao agreed to testing and floyd responded with "i'm not even thinking about boxing right now, I'm on vacation."

Anyways, if more fighters back stricter drug testing the commissions need to enforce these stricter protocols. If not, things are too tricky and guys will disagree on what the exact terms are or to do the testing at all and shit will continue to be fucked up.

Personally, I don't think the Olympic testing is necessary it's overkill but stricter testing (which would include random blood tests any time of the year whether you're scheduled to fight or not, as long as your a licensed fighter) should be enforced by the commissions.

I was referring to the 1st round of negotiations when Pac's refusal to take Random Style drug testing up until 2 weeks of the fight was the "only" road block.

We're already passed whose fault it was that the fight never happened. If Pacquiao agreed to the testing during the 2nd round of negotiations then why didn't he agree during the first time when they went to a mediator? But that argument is for another thread.

And do you think its a coincedence that his concern surfaced while he was negotiating to fight the toughest opponent of his life?
Lol at toughest opponent....

Pacquiao ain't all that tough..... he's been knocked out and beaten before... don't sit up here and act like Pacquiao is invincible.... Floyd would have been the toughest opponent of Pacquiao's life, since you want to take it there.

It's obvious the Mayweather's think the dude is juicin'.... he wanted proof that he wasn't juicin'...

Who has Floyd faced that's a tougher fight for him than Manny Pacquiao, Tony?

Of course, Floyd is Manny's toughest fight too, but your ignorance is just crazy. You sound like one of the fucking Mayweather's yourself. Ridiculous!
