i hunted with shotguns all my life. a shotgun shell is full of tiny little bb's (depending on what size shot they use). at close range a shotgun will rip you in half, but the farther away you are, the little bb's seperate into a bigger spread out pattern. if you get shot in the face from 10 feet away it will take your head off, but if you get shot from lets say 100 feet away, only a few of the bb's hit you as they have spread out to a pattern of about 30 feet around. thus getting hit from farther away will leave you with several little holes, but nothing like it would if you were up close.
