read Meriil Hodge's assessment of Vince Young with great disappointment. I'm not sure what I expected from ESPN given their propensity for over-hyping and over-scrutinizing every little thing in sports. The network has truly become little more than a tabloid akin to TMZ or the National Enquirer.

Hodge, like most ESPN "analysts", believes he can predict how effective Vince Young will be as a QB based on a season and a half of play. This is ridiculous. Let's see how some other great QBs looked after starting about the same number of games as Vince Young:

Troy Aikman: Comp %:51.30 Yards: 4,328 TD/INT: 20/36 Rating: 61.15
John Elway: Comp%: 51.90 Yards: 4,621 TD/INT: 25/29 Rating: 65.85
Steve McNair: Comp%: 55.35 Yards: 5,893 TF/INT: 29/33 Rating: 75.25
Brett Favre: Comp%: 62.45 Yards: 6,530 TD/INT: 37/37 Rating: 78.75
Peyton Manning: Comp%: 59.40 Yards: 7,874 TD/INT: 52/43 Rating: 80.95

Vince Young: Comp%: 57.10 Yards: 4,745 TD/INT: 21/30 Rating: 69.00

On this list, Vince Young would be 3rd in Completion%, 4th in Yards Passing, 5th in TD/INT, 4th in QB Rating.

Vince also has a winning record (17-9) as a Starting QB, was selected to the Pro Bowl, won the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award and took his team to the playoffs in his second year.

Neither Aikman, Favre or McNair made the playoffs in their first two seasons. Only Manning and Favre made the pro bowl in their first two years.

I've seen Vince make a concerted effort to improve as a passing QB. It says alot that he realizes at a young age that running QBs have highlight reels but not long careers. Vince has the potential, in my opinion, to become, at best, a John Elway/Steve Young type QB who scrambles to create holes in the defense or, at worst, a Steve McNair/Jeff Garcia type who does the same things, just not as well.

We have to be patient and remember that Vince Young is only 24 years old. Even the greats have to start somewhere, none of them did it alone. They all had learning curves and they all required help. Aikman had Irvin, Elway had Watson, Favre had Sharpe, Manning had Harrison, McNair had Mason.

If Vince grows as much from year 2 to 3 as in year 1 to 2 and if we can pick up a playmaker to catch the ball I believe he'll prove himself.

that is all :ermm:

Vince is a good qb... I think they're being too hard on him. Why weren't all these critics getting on Alex Smith this hard?

I just don't see why the critics are getting on him like they are.... I mean how are Matt Leinhart stats compared to Vince's? And Vince played with that messed up quad for most of this season.

TRUE. I JUST THINK VINCE HAS HORRIBLE THROWING MECHANICS. IT'S OBVIOUS HE'S A PHENOMENAL ATHLETE AND KNOWS HOW TO WIN. I'M ROOTING FOR HIM FOR SURE.

They aren’t getting on Alex and Matt cause they suck and everyone knows it.

Vince plays for a winning team and is kind of OK. Winning teams get more attention.

What good is it gonna do to harp on Alex and how bad the 49ers are?

We already know!

True, but Matt plays for a POTENTIALLY good team with LOTS of talent...you would think a guy who has the best young WR duo in the league would do better.

HAHA...I know.

What I'm saying though is that the Cards are sitting at home and still have done nothing. Plus...he went at 10 in the draft.

VY went no. 3. and plays for a playoff team. Bigger expectations and more scrutiny.

I think everyone has just about given up on Alex.

I am just using the Alex Smiths, Leinhart's as examples because everyone has high expectations for those as well. Just offering comparisons offica.... No one is harping on how bad the 49ers offense is in this thread.

Exactly! Good point!! Just offering comparisons. Vince Young has led his team to the playoffs and Leinhart hasn't. Leinhart plays in a worse division and he has receivers to work with. So while these critics are getting on Vince Young they need to get on Leinhart as well.

^^i agree but for some reason people didnt have high expectations of leinhart as they did vince coming into this year

prolly cause vince was the cover of madden and a probowler but he led his team to the playoffs which is a better achievement than going to the probowl IMO. ppl are just dumb

I know…NOBODY is talking about the 49ers...that’s my point. It’s really not hard to understand.

They are getting on VY cause he went to the playoffs and didn’t look all that impressive. They aren’t gonna talk about all the other QB’s who are at home and haven’t done anything.

It’s playoff time…what sense does it make to talk about Harrington, Carr, Smith and Matt.

Nobody cares about them unless you happen to be a fan of one of those teams.

I hear you, people expected Vince to lead his team to the playoffs this year (and he did) because of the way the Titans came on strong last season. I don't think his throwing mechanics are bad... he throws pretty tight spirals if you ask me.

They were moving the ball fine against San Diego and was about to take a 10-0 lead until Brown fumbled. Vince did fine as a Qb this year!

Then why did you mention "harping on the 49ers offense" when NOBODY was talking about the 49ers?

The critics need to lay off Vince Young because there are other qb's that are doing worse. Who does look impressive against San Diego's D? Not many besides Tom Brady.

You were wondering why the critics weren’t talking about Alex Smith.

I said that VY plays for a winning team that gets more attention…and what good is it gonna do to talk about Smith and the 49ers.

Go back and read through the posts...it's all there.
