Seven killed since Post editor's Thursday morning shooting

OAKLAND — A gunman with an assault rifle unleashed a barrage of bullets at a van parked on a North Oakland street late Saturday, killing one man who lived nearby and wounding his brother and their friend, police said.
In an unrelated shooting early Sunday, a 20-year-old man was shot to death by someone who had just knocked on the door of his East Oakland home.

The latest slayings continue an eruption of violence in Oakland. Since last Thursday morning — when Oakland Post editor Chauncey Bailey, 57, was slain — eight people have been killed in the city.

Police say Bailey's suspected killer — 19-year-old Devaughndre Broussard, a handyman at Your Black Muslim Bakery — confessed to the slaying of the journalist who was working on stories about the bakery's financial woes, but suspects in the other seven killings are still at large.

Killed in the Saturday nightshooting in the 600 block of 54th Street was Khatari Gant, 25, who lived just a few houses away from where the 1985 orange and white Dodge camper van was parked.

His 23-year-old brother was also wounded, as was a 22-year-old Oakland man who was a friend of theirs. Their names were not released by police.

Police said the men were in the van parked on the south side of the residential street that runs between Shattuck Avenue and Dover Street in the shadow of

Highway 24.

Police are not sure how long the three men were in the van before a man with an assault rifle walked up on the driver's side about 11:25 p.m. and fired more than a dozen bullets at the vehicle, said Sgt. George Phillips.
The gunman then fled, possibly to a waiting car, police said.

Gant's younger brother and the friend were found outside the van when police and paramedics arrived. Gant was still in the vehicle.

All were taken to local hospitals with multiple gunshot wounds and Gant was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, police said.

The other two were in stable condition Sunday.

The brothers' father heard the gunfire and was among those watching emergency personnel attend to them before leaving for the hospital behind the injured men. The father was not available for comment late Sunday, nor was any information about the slain or injured men.

Phillips said police don't have a motive yet for the attack, but police do know the men inside the van were the definite targets of the gunman.

In an unrelated incident at 3:19 a.m. Sunday, Kevin F. Sharp Jr., was shot and killed after he answered a knock on the door of his home in the 1900 block of 13th Avenue.

Sharp, who had been watching television, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Sgt. James Morris said police have no motive for the killing and no information on the suspect who fled after the shooting.

He said police were told Sharp used to work as a salesperson at a department store.

Saturday's two killings brought the homicide count for the year to 79. Last year at this time there were 84 homicides in the city. The final count for 2006 was 148.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $20,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the suspect in the van attack and up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of Sharp's killer.

Anyone with information can call police at 238-3821 or Crime Stoppers at 238-6946.
