Niners' Smith out versus Ravens

Posted: Monday October 1, 2007 4:48PM; Updated: Monday October 1 2007 4:48PM

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- Quarterback Alex Smith will miss the San Francisco 49ers' game against Baltimore on Sunday, but won't need surgery on his separated right shoulder.

Coach Mike Nolan said Monday the 49ers won't set a target return date for Smith until Thursday, when the swelling subsides in his shoulder.

Though similar injuries sometimes require two to three months of recovery, Nolan expressed hope Smith might even return by Oct. 21, when the 49ers visit the New York Giants in their first game after a bye week.

Smith was hurt on the third play of the 49ers' 23-3 loss to Seattle on Sunday when 308-pound defensive tackle Rocky Bernard landed on him while sacking him.

Trent Dilfer, who got his first game action since 2005 in relief of Smith, will get the start against the Ravens, the team Dilfer led to its only Super Bowl victory.

Target date Oct 21st... against the Giants? What's wrong with Mike Nolan? Did he not see the Giants/Eagles game last night? WTF....

Haha... Mike Nolan is feeling the heat? He's going to be on the hot seat. He's crazy for "hoping" he returns against the Giants.

Separated shoulder... you didn't see the way Rocky landed on him? Remember what Tony Siragusa (sp) did to Rich Gannon when Baltimore came to Oakland? It was sort of like that. Mike Nolan is crazy for wanting him to return against the Giants.

Did you guys see Dilfer? He would be crazy to NOT want Smith to return ASAP. Dilfer looks horrible. He scrambled INTO sacks and made very poor decisions all game long. There's no way we can win any games with him playing like that.

^^Not if he plays like he did on Sunday.

He made a lot of poor decisions.. He threw balls Alex Smith never would have thrown. On top of that he's a statue out there. Alex Smith made our line look a lot better than it had been playing because he can scramble away from a sack, but Dilfer was scrambling INTO sacks and might have been making them look even worse. Not only that, but Dilfer's passes were UGLY as hell.

Maybe it was due to the fact that he hasn't played a real game since 05, but he looked like SHIT out there.

Yeah Dilfer did look pretty bad. But they shouldn't rush Smith back though. I am not a doctor but shoulder separations take time to heal or else it will pop back out. Your squad is in trouble.
