San Jo used to be a lot grimier than it is now back in the late 80's and 90's... Downtown wasn't cool to be in and neither was a lot of NE SJ (N 11th, N 24th, etc). The East Side's always been grimey. Now it's gotten better because of Silicon Valley and all the technology, but even now the murder rate's climbing back up... the economy is bad and people are hungry. It's not something to be proud of, but people who clown on SJ are people who weren't around in the 90's.
