West Palm Beach, FL (AHN) - Don Imus is used to being a polarizing figure for his listeners, but he took it to another level during his Thursday morning show.

The opinionated talk show host used some insensitive and harsh language during the broadcast of his Imus in the Morning show on WFAN radio show, which is also simulcast on MSNBC, when describing the Rutgers women's basketball team.

In reference to Rutgers, which finished runner-up to Tennessee in the NCAA Women's basketball tournament, Imus used both racist and sexist language to describe the team that is primarily composed of African-American women.

When discussing Tuesday's championship game, the talk turned to the tattoos that many of the players had. A person identified as "Imus in the Morning" executive producer Bernard McGuirk exclaimed off-camera "those 'are some hard core hos."

In response, rather than chastising McGuirk for the remark, Imus agreed, saying, "That's some nappy-headed hos there. I'm gonna tell you that now, man, that's some -- woo. And the girls from Tennessee, they all look cute, you know, so, like -- kinda like -- I don't know."

Here's the full transcript of the offensive exchange, courtesy of Media Matters:

DON IMUS: So, I watched the basketball game last night between -- a little bit of Rutgers and Tennessee, the women's final.

SID ROSENBERG: Yeah, Tennessee won last night -- seventh championship for [Tennessee coach] Pat Summitt, I-Man. They beat Rutgers by 13 points.

IMUS: That's some rough girls from Rutgers. Man, they got tattoos and --

BERNARD McGUIRK: Some hard-core hos.

IMUS: That's some nappy-headed hos there. I'm gonna tell you that now, man, that's some -- woo. And the girls from Tennessee, they all look cute, you know, so, like -- kinda like -- I don't know.

McGUIRK: A Spike Lee thing.

IMUS: Yeah.

McGUIRK: The Jigaboos vs. the Wannabes -- that movie that he had.

IMUS: Yeah, it was a tough --

CHARLES McCORD: Do The Right Thing.

McGUIRK: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

IMUS: I don't know if I'd have wanted to beat Rutgers or not, but they did, right?

ROSENBERG: It was a tough watch. The more I look at Rutgers, they look exactly like the Toronto Raptors.

MSNBC issued a statement regarding Imus saying, "While simulcast by MSNBC, 'Imus in the Morning' is not a production of the cable network and is produced by WFAN Radio. As Imus makes clear every day, his views are not those of MSNBC. We regret that his remarks were aired on MSNBC and apologize for these offensive comments."

Rutgers surprisingly advanced to the championship game after knocking off No. 1 Duke in the Sweet 16, No. 3 Arizona State in the Elite Eight and No. 3 LSU in the Final Four before succumbing to Tennessee in the championship, 59-46.

Imus issued a statement on Friday to apologize for his remarks.

"I want to take a moment to apologize for an insensitive and ill-conceived remark we made the other morning regading the Rutger's women's basketball team, which lost to Tennessee in the NCAA championship game on Tuesday," the statement read. "It was completely inappropriate and we can understand why people were offended. Our characterization was thoughtless and stupid, and we are sorry."

Suspended for 2 weeks

NEW YORK (AP) - CBS Radio and MSNBC both said they were suspending Don Imus' morning talk show for two weeks following his reference last week to members of the Rutgers women's basketball team as ``nappy-headed hos.''

The suspension begins next Monday.

While CBS made its announcement without comment, MSNBC said Imus' regret at making the inappropriate comment and his stated dedication to changing the show's discourse made it believe this was the appropriate response.

``Our future relationship with Imus is contingent on his ability to live up to his word,'' the network said. MSNBC simulcasts his radio program weekday mornings.

Imus, who has made a career of cranky insults in the morning, was fighting for his job following the joke that by his own admission went ``way too far.'' He continued to apologize Monday, both on his show and on a syndicated radio program hosted by the Rev. Al Sharpton, who is among several black leaders demanding his ouster.

i was just watching what Al Sharpton had to say about this on CNN. He was brining up some good shit about how ppl get excused from sayin shit like that.

he was sayin how its funny how these cats get their other celebrity friends to say they arent racist but ironically arent even apart of the group that was offended. he went on to talk about how they never address the people who were offended and ask them about how the person needs to go about appologizing or mending the wrongs. Theyll simply have their rich white friends or a sell out jessy jackson come in and tell them that this person is sorry and therefor exempt from punishment. he went on to compare how other old white dj's were FIRED for saying less offensive things but in todays day n age a simple appology gets someone off the hook.

I think because Steve Harvey is a known comedian, most ppl cut him slack like that white lady Lisa Lampinelly. She talks about all races but isnt called a racist @ all, shit her shit is even aired on comedy central uncensored. so kill that noise. Comedians r given leeway, black and white.

Because I am not white, or Asian, I cant speak on why their community activists did not condemn it. White folks too scared to admit they have a culture thats why no one is appointed an advocate (granted YES white culture and white activists have to walk a fine line, more so than any other race in the US). Individually each "white" ethnicity has leaders, ie. Italian, German, Irish etc. but not collectively, as do Black-Americans cuz we cant.

Its just black folks have a history of that kinda stuff in the US and many black people r still alive when it was LEGALLY ACCEPTABLE for them to be treated as seperate and unequal, so of course thats gonna rub them wrong. Yeah homie, im talkin about only 40-50 years ago, and in reference to my mom n pops when they went to the south and had to use the colored only bathrooms n shit or if u were black in the north couldnt go 2 school @ a white school.

why wasnt it on BET? I dunno. But lemme fill u in on somethin about BET and black people. BET IS A GROSS MISREPRESENTATION OF BLACK PEOPLE, BLACK CULTURE, BLACK VALUES and so forth. It czn sure play the hell out of the latest rap and hip hop videos tho, and fire someone like Tavis Smiley. but then again its owned by Viacom, the same company that owns MTV and wont even fund BETs College Hill in the same manner it funds MTV's Real World..

hold on player. ur dealin with a argument fallacy called a slippery slope.

theyd let him on cuz its an event that made NATIONAL attention that the news corporations felt was newsworthy, ie. worth the FINANCIAL GAIN. they know that stuff like this gets people to watch their channel and see who they can have on, to represent the "extremes" of each side of the argument so they can create drama and make sales.

the reason the black on black incidents such as what happened at the MSG HS hoops game doesnt sell for white audience. Its not gonna be as big of an issue to sit down n cover that. it happens all over the place, black and white and isnt really an issue. its an old topic.

so basically they let sharpton on for that cuz it was somethin they wanted to cover and know there r 2 people who watch when someone like al sharpton is on the tv, black folks and everyone else who agrees with what he says and the other people who completely disagree and wanna have a debate. and that pretty much covers the full spectrum of an issue thus making it watchable by all maximizing their profit and viership. so thats why they have him on there fo r that toic. did CNN, MSNBC etc do a big expose on that and not invite Shapton? Sharpton doesnt control what the news channels air when they invite him on to discuss somethin

I think people are over reacting. I think it was a poor attempt of humor. I don't know his history on these types of issues...but if this is his worst...I wouldn't call it racism at all.

His remarks were not racist.

Saying someone looks like a ho is not racist.

Saying someone has nappy hair is not racist.

Saying that rutgers would most likely loose because the team had more black players and was therefore inherently less intelligent would be racist.

I think Imus is definately an idiot for what he said, and for a man in his position he should definately know better. I'm not black so I guess I'd never know how pissed I'd be, but I kinda feel they're putting him thru the ringer. Yes, he made a mistake. He sounded apologetic and bad about what he said. The media is kicking his ass. The only thing that really bothers me is that they want him to get fired so badly. Let his bosses make that decision. Al Sharpton is the man, he's done a lot for our society but I kinda feel he's doing to much in this situation. Like when he brought his daughter out and was like 'would you call her a nappy headed ho'. I dunno, it's a touchy subject. Just my 2 cents.
