does anyone know a lot about iPod's?

i just got this one off my buddy, and i hooked it up to my computer and restored it so i could put all my shit on there. the shit is all fucked up though, 9 tiems out of 10, as soon as I hook it up iTunes freezes up, and as soon as I unplug the ipod, iTunes is cool again. Now, The other 1 out of 10 times i hook it up, it tries to automatically update it with all the songs in my library, which would be cool if A. it actually put them on there without freezing halfway through or if B. i even wanted my whole library on there. I have a lot of shit in my library thats garbage. I want to just hook it up and put shit on there manually. Also, theres a little lock symbol next to it and it wouldn't let me add music when i stopped it from automatically updating. how do i fix this?

I think its the 2nd version, the operating system is windows XP, and i don't think I have the latest version of iTunes. i will upgrade it right now.

You have to hook up the iPod to the computer, right click the iPod and go to the preferences...then go to ' Manually Update My Folder ' instead of Automatically ...then it wont try to erase all of your shit...

The freezing thing...I don't know...mine did that too...it showed a little folder with an X through it, and I pretty much trashed it...because it kept doing that...
