well song writing and poetry are pretty much the same, minus putting the words against the rhythm of an instrument.
i think one difference between rap and poetry is that rap is heavily dependent on rhymes while some of the best poetry may not rhyme.

also rap is written to the beat of the song where the meter of poetry depends on what the writer is trying to do.

also, rap in general tells a story with a plot. While a poem could simply be about a rose or a tree or something.

I don't think you can say there is a difference in content because that depends on the writer/rapper. but beat and meter are different, and the dependance on rhymes in rap, yeah.

yeah rap lyrics usually have characters(people) while poetry could be strictly about inanimate objects. i usually think of rap as an active voice of poetry. It's a lil more complicated than that but Im not gonna go in depth.

yeah but the point is rap lyrics could have anything in them it's just that rappers mainly choose to rap about what they do. I'm sure you've heard Aesop Rock's shit and his rap could easily be called poetry if you wrote it down.

hip hop is based upon witty rhymes
too many hip hoppers and their fans these days think they're "witty" cause they can come up with stupid similes: "im worth more money than oil and you cant see me, so crude on the mic like bp!" oooooohhhhh shit son, i get it, like the oil and shit!!! throw in 5 lame similes like this in a track and they think theyre the most clever dudes out there.

ive never really got into poetry myself, but i sure as hell respect and am impressed by a lot of it

theres this dude, b. dolan, who i think can get down pretty hard:

poem starts at about 2:30

not sure if this is poetry, but its funny:

his raps are pretty cool too:
