I don't think you can say there is a difference in content because that depends on the writer/rapper. but beat and meter are different, and the dependance on rhymes in rap, yeah.
yeah rap lyrics usually have characters(people) while poetry could be strictly about inanimate objects. i usually think of rap as an active voice of poetry. It's a lil more complicated than that but Im not gonna go in depth.
yeah but the point is rap lyrics could have anything in them it's just that rappers mainly choose to rap about what they do. I'm sure you've heard Aesop Rock's shit and his rap could easily be called poetry if you wrote it down.
too many hip hoppers and their fans these days think they're "witty" cause they can come up with stupid similes: "im worth more money than oil and you cant see me, so crude on the mic like bp!" oooooohhhhh shit son, i get it, like the oil and shit!!! throw in 5 lame similes like this in a track and they think theyre the most clever dudes out there.
