HAYWARD, Calif. Oct. 11, 2007 (KGO) - All lanes are now open on south-bound 880 in Hayward more than four hours after a gruesome discovery. A man's body had apparently been hit by many cars. The CHP had to shut down the freeway completely causing a massive backup through the morning commute.
This is being investigated as a homicide but the CHP is considering all possibilities. They suspect this man was a pedestrian in the southbound lanes of 880 when he was hit by a large vehicle or several smaller vehicles and killed. The investigation that followed shut down all lanes of Southbound 880 for three hours and caused a monumental traffic jam during the morning commute.
Highway Patrol Officers shut down 880 so they could conduct what could possibly turn out to be a criminal investigation.
"Homicide is a big word but we have to treat it that way initially, because we roll up to a scene where we have a body in the roadway and we don't know what transpired," said Ofc. Oscar Johnson, California Highway Patrol.
There were dozens of orange circles marked by the investigators - each one where a piece of evidence had been found. The traffic backup went all the way from near the San Mateo Bridge north to Oakland and out 580 to Castro Valley. Northbound lanes were jammed as well. About 9:00 am two southbound lanes reopened, the fifth and final southbound lane opened about 10:00. The CHP first heard reports of a problem on 880 about 6:00 am.
"It was called debris or an animal in the roadway, and callers were putting it well south of here on the northbound side of the freeway. So our initial search was south of here. Then I kept expanding the search until I ended up rolling into this scene and identifying it as a human. At which point I immediately shutdown the freeway north of there and diverted everybody off at A Street," said Ofc. Oscar Johnson.
The coroner got stuck in this traffic jam and didn't arrive until hours after the initial discovery of the body.
The victim of all of this is described as a 53-year-old Hispanic male - his identity is being withheld until they can contact next of kin.
