A man who said he’d just been released from jail was arrested after he was seen panhandling on the city’s west side. Dale Jackson, 57, faces a preliminary charge of panhandling.

Bloomington Police Sgt. Joe Crider arrested Jackson after seeing him while on patrol at 4:06 p.m. Thursday. According to the police report, Crider saw Jackson approaching stopped cars at the intersection of West Third Street and Franklin Road. Police said Jackson walked away from the car with cash in his hand.

Crider spoke to Jackson who denied soliciting motorists for money.

Jackson was taken to the Monroe County Jail. While being booked into jail, Crider noticed Jackson took a wad of cash from his pocket, according to the report. When asked about the money, Jackson said he’d just been released from jail three hours prior to his arrest. Jackson told Crider he could make up to $40 an hour by panhandling.

Lt. David Drake said that intersection as well as Bloomfield Road and Liberty Drive, East Third Street and West Third Street are places where panhandlers often stand.

“We get complaints about this constantly,” Drake said.
