LAS VEGAS (AP) -- A police SWAT team shot and killed a gunman this evening after they say he shot at them during a standoff at a northeast Las Vegas apartment complex.
Police say the heavily armed man -- who hasn't been identified -- briefly pinned down three patrol officers who responded to a call about a smell of marijuana at the Woodridge Villa apartments (off Owens Avenue near Eastern Avenue) northeast of downtown Las Vegas.
Undersheriff Douglas Gillespie says he shot again later at SWAT officers during failed negotiations to get him to surrender. That's when they shot back and killed him.
Police say NO police officers or other residents were wounded by gunfire. But one woman was treated for unspecified minor injuries after the initial confusion before noon.
School officials say about 13-thousand kids were kept after school at nearby campuses including Rancho, Desert Pines and Global Academy high schools.
Police say that was deemed the safest place for them to be. About 30 neighbors who were evacuated from 12 neighboring apartments were taken by bus to the city-owned Cashman Center.
