Greetings album pushaz, and consumers as well..

What I want to know is what yall think about E.P's.

I get alot of shit from folx about droppin an EP, but I personally think its dope..I wanted to hear from all yall tho..

Cosumers: Whats a decent price to pay for a EP? Over the web and instores. Also name some dope EP's that have been put out over the years..

Artists: What do you plan to accomplish with puttin out an EP rather then a LP? Was it a short cut, or a promo tactic? Just drop some game on us...

This is the EP thread....

I DONT BELIEVE I HAVE EVER BOUGHT A SHORT ALBUM, ITS A WASTE OF MONEY TO ME, CUZ MOST STORES STILL CHARGE THE SAME PRICE EP OR LP AND YOU GET HALF AS MANY SONGS..... ID SAY A ALBUM SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST 10 TRAX NOT COUNTING INTRO,SKITS,OUTRO ETC... I ALWAYS THINK THAT MAYBEE ITS ONLY GOT 6-7 TRAX CUZ THAT ALL THEY COULD DO, OR CUZ THEY DONT HAVE THAT MANY GOOD SONGS, PLUS ITS HARD WORK TO PUT OUT A GOOD EP!!! I PREFER A FULL LENGTH ALBUM, LAST GOOD SHORT ALBUM I GOT WAS HOLLOW TIP "TAKIN NO SHORTS" WHICH WAS A FUCCIN CLASSIC, BUT STILL TOO SHORT....

JUST MY OPINION

I have to dissagree wit yall. I think puttin out an E.P. is a dope idea, especially if you are an unknown artist, or upand coming. Its a good way to give peolpe a feel of what your doin and if its really hot, its kinda like a tease. And if you peep out e.p.s for tha same price as an L.P., you gotta switch record shops! I think between 5-7 bucks is a coo price. Even for an established artist an e.p. can be coo. Not one person can say if their favorite artist drop'd an e.p. b4 their next big l.p. u wouldn't buy it? Shit, 2 off tha hook e.p.'z I have ever pick'd up... Eazy-E "5150-home for tha sick" and F.E. "Tha E.P." Please tell me those aint tha shit?! 1one1

I PUT OUT A EP AND GOT GREAT REPONSE FROM IT. IT GOT REVIEWS IN ALL THE MAJOR MAGS AS IF IT WAS A FULL LENGTH ALBUM. IT'S A GOOD WAY TO TEST THE MARKET. WE HAD ENOUGH SONGS TO DO A ALBUM AND PROBABLLY WOULD HAVE RELEASED A FULL ALBUM IF WE HAD TO DO IT AGAIN. EP'S CAN BE COSTLY BECASUE THE CONSUMER MAY INSTINCTIVELY WANT MORE THAN 7 SONGS (WHICH IS HOW MANY WESTBOUND HAD ON IT). AN EP DOES END PRETTY QUICKLY WHICH COULD BE A TURN OFF, BUT IT COULD BE A PLUS IF THE CONSUMER IS FEELING YOUR SHIT. BUT WHY PRESS UP A CD THAT WILL COST JUST AS MUCH AS PRESSING A FULL LENGTH ALBUM AND GET LESS MONEY FROM YOUR DISTRIBUTOR OR THE STORES IF YOU GO DIRECT. IT'S PROS AND CONS TO IT. YOU ARE MUCH BETTER OFF DOING AN ALBUM UNLESS IT'S FILLED WITH FILLER MATERIAL.

I'm all for EP's as long as it's all new quality material. People are forgetting one of the hardest ever was a little EP by the name of THE AUTOPSY.

One thing I'd really like to see is cats put out EP's between albums. I've suggested it to a few people who dropped strong albums the past two years, but haven't put anything out since. It's a good way to keep your name out there circulating in a "Damn the EP is knockin'. Can't wait to hear the upcoming full-length" kind of way instead of a "Damn it's been two years since [insert rapper name here]'s last album. What the fuck is he doin'?" kind of way.

regardless what anyone thinks.......DROP an EP cuzzin....but the huge problem is most store are going to charge the same as an LP just like tctout said..so cats will probably not pick it up! unless your like MAJOR STATUS///like 50, EMINEM, or DRE..then you wont have a problem, but the way shit is right now.......you might as well add some songs on there....and make it a whole LP....

Aight so since my name was mentioned...I will drop my input.

SHORT CUTT? Never that....I got a Double Disc droppin this next month with 36 tracks, that has 5 of me on tracks...4 which are complete solo's and 1 feat. w/cats out of Miami.

The E.P. I am dropping is to keep the music coming on a more consistant basis from me and this label. I am done with dropping one album a year and the E.P. will help me change that. *It's sort of what Doxx had mentioned and that was "E.P.'s between albums". That's along the same lines of my thinking.

This E.P. will most likely not go in stores because I do not want consumers getting raped for a short cd release. I will sell it online and out the trunk. If I can find a few mom and pops who will agree on a certain Pin Point Price then I will shoot it to them. This E.P. as well as the comp is FUNDING my full length release and not too mention gonna tell me wether the public is feeling me as a solo attraction or just someone who should stick to features etc.

There will be no features on this E.P. as I don't think there should be...if your gonna do such a short album, it should be you and you only showing that you can shine. Save the features for your full length and even then don't everwhelm it with them.

There's always a myth to my madness & there you have it...but a short cut by no means at all.

e.p.'s are coo if your gonna slang'em on the streets for like 5 bucks.yeah the chains will fuck you but if your unknown thats the best way to go.alot of foos wanna come out and drop an l.p. when no one knows who the fuck they are.droppin a grip to produce an album and chances are it aint gonna sell alot.especially these days....

e.p.'s in the past sold good.

eazy-e-cold 187'em
c-bo-autopsy
e-40-mail man
brotha lynch-24 deep

as far as my city goes
C.O.P.S. dropped "Kill'em" years back and the shit sold good for a local release.

D.O.A. dropped "Feva in the funk house" and the shit also sold good....

i remember back in the day when C.O.P.S. dropped "its a boy" ep,that shit out sold every rap album at tower records over here in stockton....

but like im sayin.there a good idea to get ya name out if ya name aint realy out...even if your a local star, drop an e.p. and drive around the bay and valley with your trunk full.
test the market.you'll know if your hot,and if you aint hot then cool it down and find another hobby....

The best EP of all time is still Spice 1 - Let it Be Known IMO. I'm not too fond of EP's at record stores because of a steep price for so few songs, but if I knew I could get my hands on an EP for $5 or so, I would swoop it up with the quickness. I think EP's are a good way to test a market and a good way to get fans interested in your music. EP are sorta like releasing singles, except you throw in some other songs to show people you can come tight on more than one song. Just my thoughts on EP's. Hope that helps out some homie.

Late!
