When Master P was get 85% of all his profit and priority only takin 15% u might as well call him indy!!
Would you consider Death Row an indie in their day? Death Row and No Limit are the exact same kind of label. Thing is, No Limit created such a huge demand for their music that, they could negotiate the contracts the way they wanted it. Priority was there to distribute...and if No Limit spent No Limit money on all their shit, of course they get that much of the profits. They were still a major label with major acts. Death Row was independent, Ruthless was independent, Cash Money was independent...but they went major.

By major, I mean they are so successful that everybody wants to get on with them. If you want to be technical, almost every record label was an "indie" at some point in time...with the exception of major corporations like Universal and Sony. Shit, even Interscope was small time at one point.

Even tho i kinda agree with you its way more to it. Sales went down for everybody. Downloading/bootleggin is the main cause of sales declining you even see major labels focusing on digital sales and ringtones more.

It wont ever get back to what it used ( it will never like you said 'sell' again) to be its a new generation that came up on downloading they dont know anything else. Cats is hardly eating off this rapshit anymore all across the country.. you have to grind twice as hard these days its all bad
Go look it up, rap artists NEVER made big bread off album sales...they made it in all those other areas (publishing, tours, etc.) Nelly made crap on his first album, something like $0.08 for every dollar...but he got rich because he did everything else correctly. $0.08 PER DOLLAR! That is peanuts after you pay the label what you owe them. THEN, you pay the manager, the label, the attorney, the accountant and the IRS. IF you have a 12% royalty rate, you end up with about 6% of the royalties IF THAT! Packaging Deduction, all that shit adds up. So, you walk with about $0.96 per record sold.

So, if rappers aren't eating, they need to not blame downloading, because they made ass off record sales to begin with. You can't DOWNLOAD a radio broadcast and take away from the publishing royalties. You can't pirate a concert, feel me? People still go to concerts, and the radio still exists (Two biggest money makers in the record industry).

Sydal knows his biz!!! & 96cent a record sold is a great deal (ha) u usually wont even get that...Most labels will find a way to keep that by saying your 20,000 video cost 80,0000 and that your promos cost 6digits....so when u sign and get your advancement look as that as thats all u gonna get ouf of the album...u gotta do what Sydal said....own at least half of your publishing and stay on that road (Where u make all your money..lawfully u can only give up 20%) features and hopefully some endorsements.

Indeedy. If I remember correctly, ASCAP will shoot an artist $0.07 per spin. If you have half of your publishing, that's $0.035 per spin. Times that by about 12 spins a day, times 2000, for 30 days straight AT LEAST! That'd be about $25,000 a month, not including the clubs all over the country that play the single every night, or 3 times a week, or whatever. That doesn't include Retail stores or what have you, that pay to play the song during work hours. That doesn't include possible money from song placement in movies, PLUS royalties from the soundtrack sales. Then you tour for, say, 2 months straight...OOOOH WEEEEE that's a lot of bread to rack up in a couple months time. The spin royalties are only for ONE single too...so imagine an album with 2, 3 or 4 singles. That ups your royalties from Radio to anywhere between $50,000-$100,000.

After all that, fuck a record. I'll make a record just to get the shit on the air and go on tour.

Oh, and about an advance...fuck an advance. Create a crew, with one or two producers, make the record, give the advance for making the record BACK to the label, and profit on all ends. Then, all the label gets back is promotion and video money, and the little "packaging" bullshit.

I know this is a little late to reply to. I was also wondering the same thing about Crooked Eye, cause I haven't heard anything from him in a while. The first three Steady Mobb'n albums were good, but they fell off in 2004 with that 'Espionage' album. I guess they were trying to fit in more with the 'less hardcore' sound of the times.
