MIDDLETOWN - Three people in two separate incidents last week learned the hard way that crime - no matter how petty - can earn one a trip to the police station.
Orlando Rosa, 24, of Meriden was charged with sixth-degree larceny after he attempted to steal a pair of shoelaces worth $1.49, police said.
Rosa was observed by a theft-prevention agent putting an extra pair of laces in a box of shoes he bought at Bob's Stores, 416 Main St.
After making no attempt to pay for the laces, he was stopped by the loss-prevention agent and police were called.
Rosa was issued a misdemeanor summons.
In a separate incident, two city teens were charged in connection with the shoplifting of a 40-ounce bottle of Molson Ice beer from Connecticut Beverage Mart on Washington Street.
According to police reports, Joshua A. Warren, 18, hid the bottle in his clothing while Spencer M. Dobroski, also 18, served as lookout.
Despite their coordinated efforts, the two were caught by police, who found them with the half-consumed bottle shortly after it was taken from the store.
The bottle was worth $3.49.
Warren was charged with sixth-degree larceny and Dobroski was charged with conspiracy to commit larceny.
