so a good friend invited me for an interview on berkeleyliberationradio.net on thursday night. so during the interview the other host of the show asks me what is it like to be a latin artist and what challenges do i face?

so off the top of my head, i responded well hip-hop is black music so i think whatever race you are if you're gonna be successful in hip-hop your music should appeal to black people.

right when i said that dude that was asking me the questions asked me like 4 followup questions kinda arguing with me. I just explained like Big Pun was the most successful latin mc and black people could rock with his music(relate to it). then dude asked me about rappers that rap in different languages and all types of shit.

just want to see what yall think about this question. when i get the audio from the interview ill post it.

hip hop isnt music for blacks.....most of it is created by blacks but I suppose that could be because it is an ancient sound originating back to Africa and it makes it easier for black people to identify with. Most people nowadays underestimate the effect hip-hop has had on popular culture worldwide......Music is an art form that can speak any language and anybody should be able to identify with, no matter what walk of life you come from....

in my opinion, hip-hop is black music just like the blues is black music.

Hip-hop was created by black people and is dominated by black people.

Just like oragami is a japanese art form even though other races do oragami. It's still a japanese art form. (might have been an odd example)

i was just surprised by the controversy my response caused. i figure most of yall not gonna agree with my point because well this message board is mostly white people. But im not trying to insult white people with this idea. i just think it's fact.

What do you mean by "Your music should appeal to black people"? What in your opinion do black people find appealing in terms of hip hop music?

Eminem is one of the best selling rap artists of all time. In what way way does his music appeal to black people? Then you have other best sellers such as Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, 2Pac, and Jay-Z, who have just as many - if not more, white fans as black fans.

when i say appeal to black people i mean black people should be able to atleast digest your music. Lets use eminem as an example. i think black people can rock to his music. the way he rhymes and puts words together he does so in a way that anyone can digest it. i don't mean to be successful in rap music you have to cater to any one group of people.

like for example you got a lot of latin rappers like in socal that i think only socal latins are gonna be able to relate to or appreciate.

to try to make something appealing to a race is to stereotype.. if you wanna be successful in hip hop then you gotta make your material appealing to the urban coulture.

i'm talking about eminems music, then i think about i'm saying music in general. sounds profiling, and it sort of is, but really the point i'm stabbing is that you got to make music that doesnt limit itself to one group. cant be rapping about drug sales, baby eating, drive by and expect little timmy turner to be able to listen to it at the next family bbq when its his turn to play a cassette
