Today I was reading about Keith Ellison (Minnesota Democrat) the first Muslim in Congress and his desire to be sworn in with a Koran instead of a Bible... he's received some flack from red state conservatives and members of the Christian right who say he's breaking from tradition... I guess most members of Congress are sworn in with a Bilble... I just wondered what some of ya'll thought of his request?

It's wrong, I'm a Christians and think if he wishes to be sworn in with the Koran, why not? Even though it may be tradition, after all this is america.

whats the problem? as if the christian bible is better or more reputable. im sure theyve both got their fair share of fairy tales in them.

I DONT THINK ANY RELIGIOUS DOCUMENT SHOULD BE THE BASIS OF A PROMISE MADE TO AMERICAN PEOPLE. i could see if it was a foolproof way of seeding out the liars but the tradition period is old and unnecessary especially if its exclusionary to anything but the christian fairy tale. like whoever puts their hand on it is magically bound to be honest.

LETS GET REAL PEOPLE. THATS THE SAME BIBLE CLINTON, BUSH, SWAGGART, HAGGARD,O.J., SCOTT PETERSON AND COUNTLESS OTHER LIARS PUT THEIR HAND ON AND LIED LATER.

OK DUDE listen, no one said it was better, whether or not someone of the GOM thinks it may be, the thread wasn't about that.

I agree

So if I put my hand on the Koran, or the Hindu Bible and Lied, wouldn't it be the same?

yeah it would be the exact same so why put your hand on any of them. id rather see a noose around their kids neck. how about that for motivation to keep it real and tell the truth?

christians are the easiest to bash by the way. you make it so easy. youre the dominant religion on this side of the planet and pretty much on it. not only that christianity is "what this country's laws and values are based on" am i correct?

Actually no members of congress are sworn in with the bible.

The controversy came when a Right-Wing talk show host Dennis Prager said he should be sworn in with a bible like everyone else. He said that if Ellison swears in with a Quran, it would “undermine American civilization” and be akin to swearing in with a copy of Hitler’s “Mein Kampf.”

All of this, not surprisingly, is unfounded since the swearing in ceremony for the House of Representatives has never included a religious book. (They do, however, have to raise their right hand and swear to uphold the constitution.)

Regardless, this Prager is a real douchebag and it wouldn't be much of a deal if he was just some regular talk show host asshole but he happens to be the person that was appointed by President Bush to the taxpayer-funded U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council.

James 5:12 and Matthew 5:34-37 should solve this problem, but these people are going to continue to do what they do.

Matthew 5:34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: 5:35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. 5:36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 5:37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

James 5:12 Above all, my brothers, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your "Yes" be yes, and your "No," no, or you will be condemned.

Why the FUCK do they have to use a RELIGIOUS book to swear someone in?

Using the Bible in the firts place and giving him shit cause he wants to use the Koran, seems a LITTLE BIT unconstitutional to me....but maybe I'm crazy?
