your problem is probably a variety or combination of things mane.. things like:
- your computers booting from a non bootable source
- your hard drive is may not be setup right in the motherboard BIOS
- youve got a corrupt NTLDR file.
- youve got some misconfiguration with the boot.ini file
- youve got a new hard drive being added recently
- a fucked boot sector or master boot record
- a really fucked up version of XP
- or something as easy as a loose hard drive cable

hit me with what error message the computer is givin you pimp. ill try to help the best i can. the worst that could happen is youd have to reformat your comp. hopefully youve got 2 hard drives on your comp to keep all your important shit on one thats seperate from the actual install drive.

can you get yourself into windows mane? if you can do that hook your shit up as c/s on the new hard drive. once inside windows go to my computer, right click on the new hard drive and click format. select NTFS and let it do its thing. once done restart the comp and get back into windows and move your shit onto the new hard drive. then hit up a homie as see if they got a copy of xp home, pro, or media edition cause your boot file is screwed. id send you a copy of my ntdlr file but i dont think that will solve your problem homes.

hmm that might work but how are you gonna get into windows then if you cant now mane?

you said youve got an old computer and youve got windows 98. your gettin the fucked ntdlr file because the hard drive within win98 uses a FAT32 file compression system where as newer hard drives and win2000+ all use a NTFS file compression system. the ntfs is way more stable and alot more compressed compared to the FAT32 system. you need to get a copy of xp and during the install process of xp itll make you convert the 2 hard drives to a NTFS format then continue on with the installation. i wanna say the chances of you bein able to recover yo shit is about 25% mane. did you have alot of important stuff, music, etc you wanted to keep off there?

i see.. that sucks mane. i dont know how computer savvy you are but you can use a program called ERD commander to try and recover as much as you can. basically boots off the cd and then scans the fucked hard drive for material and then lets you pull it off onto another hard drive. aka your new one. you can also format the new one into NTFS so you can use it to put your stuff on. it works fairly well but not 100%. if you got any access to another comp and know how to use bit torrent you can get the program real easy. otherwise its about a G to buy new.

nah you wouldnt be able to do that cause each installation of windows is tailored specifically to your computer. ie your hard drives, motherboard, processor, computer specs, hardware, etc. you would need a copy of the whole program to install a fresh version. plus like i said your computer right now is in a FAT32 compression unlike xp which is a NTFS so it would even copy onto the hard drive right. if i lived in or near your hood is burn you a copy of xp mane..

if its a new one that you recently bought then it should have a windows cd included in the whole deal. dell, compaq, emachines, hp, etc most of the time will ship you a copy of windows if you hit them up. although the cd key and that particular windows cd will work only with your comp. but even then it wont matter cause your usin it for your shit anyway. shit mane if you had windows 2000 then you can get that shit new for like 30 bucks at compusa or something. maybe then you can repair the screwed file and at least get in there to move all your stuff elsewhere for safe keeping.
