I've had some problems with AIM myself. When the computer starts up, it will go connect to the internet but I don't see the window pop-up. So when I would try to double click the aim icon on the bottom right corner in the startup area, it would disappear? Why is that?

^^it is a firewall issue. The reason it signs in for 3 seconds is cause your firewall kicks in and thicks someone tryin to hack into a port. Turn off or open the port on your firewall aim uses or turn off instant messenger protection or something like that and it should work.

^^ok it might be the xp firewall cause you dont even know you had one most of the time its turned on by default. Go to the start menu>settings>network connections

Double click on your connection.
then click on proporties
then click on advanced
make sure that box is upchecked next to firewall.

man... that's pretty weird.. http://housecall.antivirus.com

if it finds nothing, start-run-msconfig , hit ok / uncheck everything under the startup tab, restart, and see if it still happens. if it does, go back to msconfig, under the services tab, check hide all microsoft services, uncheck what remains, restart and try again.

might have a couple more ideas if all that doesn't help... who's your DSL ISP?
