Computer and electronics retailer CompUSA will be shutting down its remaining retail locations in early 2008 as the company is carved up and sold off.

It's the end of a retail era: after 23 years, computer and electronics seller CompUSA has been sold to Gordon Brothers Group LLC, a global restructuring company that specializes in carving up companies and selling off their assets. Although CompUSA's current 103 locations will remain open for business through the end-of-year holiday season, CompUSa will wind down after that, shuttering retail operations and selling off stores and service businesses. Financial terms of the takeover were not disclosed; CompUSA will be run by Gordon Brothers principal Bill Weinstein, although current CompUSA CEO Ramon Ross will stay in an executive advisory capacity during the shutdown.

CompUSA's retail operations have been struggling against big-box retailers like Best Buy, Fry's, and Wal-Mart in recent years, along with online competitors like Amazon.com and Newegg. The chain shuttering half its retail stores and received a $440 million cash infusion in early 2007 in a bid to return to profitability, but those steps obviously weren't enough to save the company.

"An orderly and expedited wind-down and asset sale process is the best option for CompUSA and its creditors at this juncture," said Weinstein, in a statement. "We are focused on assuring that CompUSA's creditors, landlords, and other key constituents are treated properly during this process. We are working hard to achieve the maximum recovery possible for the company's constituents while also minimizing unnecessary expenses. We will actively communicate with the various parties and their advisors starting today, and in the days and weeks ahead."

In the meantime, the company plans to blow out its inventory, which may make for some attractive holiday shopping for electronics fans: the company promises "attractive bargains" as part of store closing sales.

Gordon Brothers is in discussion to sell stores in key markets, and plans to continue operating CompUSA TechPro (the company's technical services business) and the online retail operation at CompUSA.com until any buyers can be lined up. the failure of CompUSA represents a rare setback for Mexican billionaire businessman Carlos Slim, who has had indirect control of the company since 2000 and had been investing significantly in its operations.

Their closing doesn't surprise me a bit. Inside scoop of some of the management is that they were poor managers and I know personally that they carried on very unprofessionally. The Sacramento store had a cashier that thought she was the bomb, but she didn't like the fact that she was not well-endowed. She also stripped part time, but no boobs didn't help in that job either. Two of the Sac Managers went in halves for her breast enhancement (oh yes, and one was married...) and they actually used to have her go in the private office and show her boobs off to their friends if they came in the store! Once she got her boobs, she moved on to be a full-time hoe. The married manager was crushed one day when his wife had his ass served with divorce papers. lol.

During a "training seminar" two managers from different stores were attracted to each other (nothing wrong with that) and they decided to stay with each other in one of the rooms, only they didn't give a damn what the manager staying in the room with him thought... Those two were married too, and hoped the third in the room kept his mouth shut, which he didn't, which is why I can write this shit now...

A third manager, a dear friend, committed suicide over another hoe. But she kept the watch he gave her... She ended up marrying a district manager after he got his divorce.

So, I'd say the place was kind of mis-managed from the TOP down.

i went to the emeryville one today everything is 10% off they had a few things that were 20% not much though. one of the employees said they prolly gon drop down to 30-40% around christmas and then 50-70% by mid to late jan. the prices are ridiculous though even with the 10% off shit is still over priced. they raise all the prices up to full retail before they start liquidating everything so no discounts off those ad prices

the compusa's up here in washington have already closed...i think they've been close since either september or some time during summer, or maybe even earlier.

i never bought shit from them, just looked at what they had to compare prices...they always charged more than other places, and the people that worked at the one's that i've been to where either complete morons or they were just flat out rude.

Their Northern Cali headquarters is in Concord, right off the freeway. They might have some really good prices soon there, cuz they were a 'super-store.'

I know. I got a mac and I know a little bit about computers, but I still had a couple questions, ya know, don't wanna buy shit that don't work then have to take it back....I had to ask hella people cuz noone knew shit.....when they finally directed me to someone who "knew about it" they ended up just reading the boxes
