Basically, BART is trying to impose wage cuts. like 7% to the ATU employees. I'm not sure what they already make though. No good union would allow for wage cuts without going on strike. It's their job to protect their members' wages. They talk about humanitarian shit but really they're there to make companies pay more for their members to do less. Anyway, I think the cuts are legitimate considering BART ridership is down 11%. That's 11% less money, approximately.
The thing that's fucked up is that BART offered the ATU employees a 1 year temporary contract so that they could keep working (albeit with lower wages) while a new contract was negotiated. This way they wouldn't have to stop service and go without wages for the months it might take to settle on a new contract - usually union employees can't use their PTO or Vacation time during a strike. Anyway, this same contract was accepted by SEIU (the country's largest union) and some other union at the Oakland Airport I think. So it's not a bad deal. ATU is just fighting hard. I don't see any way that they'll win though. BART can hold out longer than its employees can. Pretty soon folks will cross the picket line and the whole campaign will fall apart.
I haven't decided how I'm gonna get to work monday, I might take the F since it's close to my house, or I might just go up to bart since I figure there will be commuters who are gonna pick up passengers to take carpool.....but if I go up to Macarthur bart and I see picketers I am gonna cuss their punk asses out until I get a ride. boohoo, they might cut your wages. boohoo.....I already had a pay cut, then got laid off, luckily I'm good at what I do so they rehired me, but I had to go thru not having benefits, unemployment and all that shit....so seriously, FUCK THOSE UNGRATEFUL BITCHES!!! The economy is shit and they're complaining that they have jobs.

My dad is a union man, always has been, and he has instilled in me that you NEVER cross a picket line. but, I dont commute, and have never had a strike affect my life!
it all depends on what it's for. if it's because whiny little bitches are complaining that they have to go thru what the rest of the ENTIRE WORLD is going thru during a recession then I'm all for picket lines getting crossed. If there are unfair practices going on or something like that then I'll fucking make the signs for them. but this is bitch shit.
